We are hoping to have the Election package ready by early/mid August; this means that there is less than 10 days to enter your nomination and submit your "resume". As mentioned previously, there are four positions coming up for renewal, and the term is for TWO years. Please notify the Elections Officer (Stephan Suys at S_Suys@hotmail.com) of your intent to register as a candidate. The nomination deadline HAS BEEN MOVED UP to AUGUST 6th and each candidate will have to submit a brief OCUA-related biography by August 9th. (guidelines will be forwarded to all candidates) The Elections will take place on the playoff week-ends of Aug 28-29th and Sept 11-12th. For more information, or to submit your candidacy, please e-mail Stephan Suys at s_suys@hotmail.com. Good Luck to all ps. Please pass this info on to team-mates that may be interested but do not have email. ************************************************************ UPDATE ON ROSTER CHEQUES & WE STILL NEED SOME CAPTAINS INFO: Hi, Once again I must report that the roster deposit cheques mailing has been delayed. You don't want to hear excuses and I don't want to type any (ok I lied if you want to hear the excuses look at the bottom of this section). We have decided to delay mailing the cheques until Aug 14 as this will give us time to include the bios for the Board of Director nominations (see above). Rest assured we will be doing the roster deposits in a completely different manner next year - but again that is next year. The following teams still have to provide or confirm the mailing address we have. If you play on one of these teams or know someone who does please bring this to their attention so when we do mail the cheques they actually get to the proper location. A tie-dye T-shirt wrapped around his head and legs caked with sand, the Fredericton-based biologist offers a goofy grin when he agrees that the fast-paced frisbee sport called Ultimate has changed him. And four years after picking up his first frisbee, Mr. McPhee is now a representative for the Ultimate Player Association of Canada, a member of the Fredericton Ultimate League and the organizer of this weekend's third annual Parlee Beach Ultimate Tournament. "Yeah, some call it Cultimate," he smiles, looking at his bare toes. "I used to play competitive basketball and football but the day I played my first Ultimate game is the day I quit other sports." Introduced to the sport by a co-worker, Mr. McPhee is not alone in his fascination with the frisbee game. Twelve Ultimate teams from Eastern Canada travelled to Shediac this weekend to compete, with teams from Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec and New Brunswick making up the roster. A cross between soccer and basketball, Ultimate is a game that began in a New Jersey high school parking lot in 1968. Since that time, thousands of players across Canada and the United States play several times a week. "It's just ballooning," says Steve Ott, a tall and lanky computer programmer from Ottawa who plays as often as possible. "I started playing in '89 because friends were playing it. Now I've gone to Europe, twice [to play.]" Called out into the game, Mr. Ott races off to one end of the long field. Standing in his team's endzone with four other players (there are usually seven players on each team, except when playing on smaller fields), he raises the disc and hucks or launches the disc as far as he can. A member from the opposite team grabs it, stops and passes the disc up the field. The game is on. A turnover can happen whenever someone drops the disc or it is intercepted by the other team. Players are not allowed to run once they have the disc and a point is won once the disc is caught in the other team's endzone. The spirit of the game, Mr. Mcphee explains, lies in the absence of a referee. "It's all about sportmanship. If you take the referee out, there is no ref to bitch and complain at. You have to play honestly and you have to play fair," he says, adding that each team calls the fouls and after each game the teams must sing a short song to one another. "It is hard to stay angry at a team when you are singing them a song." Pierre Castonguay, a Crown prosecutor from Fredericton, began playing Ultimate this year and is hooked. "This thing called spirit really exists. It is not about winning at all costs," he says. "It is about improving yourself." A major part of the appeal is that the game is a co-ed sport and one that couples can do together, adds Mr. Ott. Tournaments and leagues are co-ed and it is not a sport that a person had to start playing as a teenager. One can only get better, he says. "I came up with my girlfriend. I got her into it and my ex, as well. She's here, too," Mr. Ott says. ************************************************************ DEAR ULTIMATE PLAYERS... Hi. My name is John Borgmeyer. I'm a freelance writer and ultimate enthusiast trying to write an article about the sport. I'm especially interested in the grassroots nature of the sport, so I'm using the internet to hear the thoughts of ultimate players around the world. Could you post this message on your group's discussion list? I'd like to hear about groups like yours, coed teams that play for fun. What is the scene like there? How did it get that way? Where's it going, and how will the sport change? On a more individual level, I'd like to hear how people got into ultimate and what they like about it. How do you feel about the concept of "spirit" in the game, or about the duality of intensity and goofiness in the sport? Do you like playing coed? I don't care much about specific answers...I'm just curious about peoples sincere opinions about ultimate frisbee (if they have any). Please use this opportunity to vent or ramble about what's going on with you and your team. Many thanks to anyone who contributes...I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Sincerely, John Borgmeyer e: jborgmeyer@hotmail.com ************************************************************ AT LAST! CONNECT YOUR TEAM ON THE WEB - FOR FREE!
