PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

ELECTION:
---------

I strongly urge every team to take part in the upcoming
elections for the 4 open OCUA board of directors positions.

Please take the time to:
- Read the bios of all of the candidates.
- Ask questions (Open Forum on the OCUA website is a good
  place for this).
- Be ready to make an "informed" vote on the day of your
  playoffs.
- Bring your ballot to the fields with you on your playoff
  date so you can vote.

I know this isn't fun stuff but the board of directors works
for you and therefore you should make an informed pick as to
who you want to be your representative.

Election bios' were mailed out last week - one envelope to each
team. Please let me know if you do not receive an envelope by
the end of this week. These bios' can also be found at the
bottom of this email.

ROSTER DEPOSIT CHEQUES:
-----------------------

These were mailed out with the bios last week. Some teams were
not issued cheques because they either:
- Did not submit a roster or submitted it too late
- Did not give us a roster deposit at all
- We made a mistake (now how could this happen)

If you believe that you were supposed to get a cheque but
did not please contact me.

FALL LEAGUE:
------------

I have recently received many questions about fall league and
although there isn't any info right now we hope to have
something ready for you very soon. We have had a few days
breathing room as Nationals is over and now have a chance to
get back to other "work".

Stay tuned to Ultimate Happenings and the OCUA web page for
information in the near future.

I WILL BE OUT OF CONTACT FROM AUG 28 TO SEPT 7TH:
-------------------------------------------------

If you do need to contact me be aware that I will not be
in town as per the dates above. Good luck to everyone in
the finals and I hope to see you at the party on
Sept 11.

Thanks
Mike Harley

ELECTION BIO: KATHY BUTLER (Nee CONNELLY)

Hi! I'm Kathy Butler and I am addicted to Ultimate.

I've been playing for about eight years, and I am well known
for my positive attitude, zone defense and the cheer.

In my spare time away from Ultimate, I have a day job that pays
for my recovery from various sports injuries. My job (as part
of a team responsible for the management and direction of a
national intergovernmental program) offers me a variety of experience
useful to my quest to get the sport a little more organized.
For example, I have written technical work instructions for
national distribution, given countless presentations to varied
audiences, led the Quality Team in our testing area, and co-ordinated
the development of an intranet site for my division. I also
chair meetings regularly and deal with a variety of public and
private sector clients.

My experience in Ultimate has been diverse as well. I played
on a "C" team called "Whamos are Dishwasher Safe", a "B" team
called "Megadisc", a travelling team called "CAOS", the "Huffin
Puffins" tournament team and I captained a Women's Team named
"Grabba Grover". Currently, I play for "I Dream of Grover" and
co-ordinate the Thursday night Women's League.

I have committed a great deal of my time and energy to Ultimate
recently, and am particularly interested in implementing suggestions
from new and experienced players. For example, due to the suggestions
I received, I have:

* drawn up the "spirit guidelines" to help teams in giving SOTG
  ratings;
* drawn up the "Coles Notes Version of the Rules" for distribution
to some high schools, and to encourage new players to read
  the
  rules;
* organized a high school clinic, attended by three local high
schools and facilitated by enthusiastic competitive-level
  players;
* implemented an annual First-Aid clinic for sports injuries
and a "taping clinic" for sports injuries; and,
* recently co-organized the first-ever Women's Hat Tournament.

What is my vision for Ultimate? I would encourage the coaching
and development of new players, and would like to see increased
involvement of Ultimate players in local high schools. I would
actively seek comments and suggestions for improvements, and
I would like to re-examine "Ultimate time."

Many are called, but few are thrown to.

ELECTION BIO: DOUG TAHIRALI

To some people the election of the OCUA Board of Directors may
seem pretty insignificant. However, with the size and growth
of this 'underground' sport, and the revenues we bring in, this
election process deserves your time, thought and support. As
a Board member up for re-election I would like to share some
of my thoughts and feelings from the past year. From experience
I would like to point out that the people that you elect must
have the time, dedication and integrity to do the job - a recognizable
name is not enough so ask around. Our league is at least 40%
women yet our Board does not reflect this - many captains are
men but that does not mean they can not vote for women - a balanced
Board is extremely important.

Personally, I have been involved with OCUA for at least 5 years
as a player, team captain, division co-ordinator, summer league
general manager and OCUA Board member. In the 'real' world I
own and operate my own physiotherapy clinic which allows me
many insights into the business world that OCUA now finds itself.
I wholeheartedly continue to support the land and irrigation
purchases, the refurbishment of in-city fields and hope to see
OCUA provide year-round Ultimate to its members. I believe that
Ultimate is not only the game but also the social side and endeavored
over the past two years to run a June party and the pre- Canada
Day camp-out. In the future I hope to push OCUA to a higher
profile through extensive involvement in local charity work.

In closing I hope you will return me to the OCUA Board so I
may continue to help Ultimate grow in the Ottawa area. However
the bottom line is that you vote responsibly and think about
your choices so OCUA can run like a business and not like a
club. THANX

ELECTION BIO: KEN LANGE

General Background:
Alberta farmboy turned software developer, I took up Ultimate
when I moved to Ottawa in 1995. I was educated at the University
of Alberta, a fine institution which foolishly granted me a
B.Sc. in Zoology/Botany, and then another in Computer Science.

OCUA Involvement:
Teams:
 Dick & Jane Layout, Wed 5/2 (1995-present)
 Outlaws, Mon/Tue 4/3 (1996-1997, captain)
Girlie Drink Drunks, Mon 43, (1997-present)
 Voodoo Lovedolls, open competitive (1997-present)
Good On Paper, coed competitive (1997-present)

- Spring Tuneup Tournament Co-Director, (1997-present)
- No Borders Tournament Volunteer (1999)
- 13th Canadian Nationals Organizing Committee (current)
- OCUA Webmaster/Web Team Leader (1997-present)
- OCUA Share Sales Committee (1997)
- OCUA Structure Committee (1998)
- UP Inc. Board of Directors (1997-present)
- OCUA Board of Directors (Sept. 1998-present)

OCUA Vision

These last few years have been a period of great change for
OCUA, culminating in the purchase and development of the new
facility on Manotick Station Road. Having been involved with
that project for 3 years now (the last as an OCUA Director involved
in the critical decision making), I can tell you that it's been
a long, arduous road to travel. We've come a long way, and we
should be proud of our accomplishments, but my term on the board
has made it more than evident to me that there's still a long
path ahead of us.

Managing our new site and stabilizing our finances (while avoiding
further fee increases) are obviously important goals for us
to address along the way, and I think that they are very attainable.
These items are definitely on my priority list. But my personal
focus for OCUA is still on improving how we function as an organization.
We've made some improvements in that area this year, and we
came up with even more good ideas, but unfortunately the sheer
time commitment of dealing with the land development issues
minimized what we as a board were able to implement in that
regard. Nonetheless, we need to be more proactive on issues,
and we need to develop a concrete plan of where we want this
organization to go. We need to be more organized, and make more
efficient use of our talented and committed volunteer base,
without wearing them down to a frazzle, as we tend to do now.
We need to further improve our communication with our members,
and provide them with the information they need when they need
it. I'm committed to trying to make these things happen, so
that we as a league, and as a sport, can continue to grow. It's
my belief that this will give us the solid base that we require
to tackle the other problems that we face.

Thanks, and please encourage your team to seriously consider
all the candidates, and to vote responsibly.

Apathy sucks.

ELECTION BIO: DEB MURPHY

I has been active in the Ultimate community since 1994. Prior
to Ultimate I played a range of sports (and still manage to
squeeze in a bit of basketball and boxing), but none compare
to Ultimate for a combination of a good workout with fun, spirit
and a chance to meet great people. In order to support my Ultimate
habit, I work as a Senior Policy Analyst with Environment Canada.

I've played on summer, fall and winter league co-ed teams in
the Ottawa leagues. I have been active in competitive Ultimate,
playing on competitive women's teams for five years. This summer
I have participated in a number of co-ed tournaments - a great
move, highly recommended! (In fact so highly recommended that
we are planning an Ottawa co-ed tournament for this September.)
I am also assisting with Canadian National Ultimate Championships
this year, organizing the player's packs.

I was active with OCUA as treasurer for two years, which was
followed by a two year tenure on the CUPA (Canadian Ultimate
Player's Association) Board of Directors, representing the Eastern
Ontario region. I was also active in the organization of winter
league, running the Saturday recreational league for two years.
After a year's respite, I'm ready to jump back into the organizational/
administrative aspects of Ultimate, thus one of the reasons
for running for an OCUA Board position.

Another reason I am seeking election to the Board is that I
feel I have skills, knowledge and time to commit to the position.
My priority will be to support the mandate of OCUA - to organize
and promote the growth of Ultimate in the Ottawa-Carleton region.
I see this being done through the continued development of the
new site and increased sponsorship, which is important for both
site development and community awareness. OCUA should link Ultimate
with the community through increased fund-raising efforts with
local charities, as well as continued and improved juniors and
school programs. Other important goals are a continued emphasis
on spirit, improved play through well organized leagues that
accommodate all levels of play, and open lines of communication
so that all players can input to the growth and direction of
our league. And not to forget the importance of supporting tournaments,
clinics and parties - great ways to meet people and just have
fun!

But, the main reason I'm running for the Board . I love Ultimate,
and want to give something back to the sport.

************************************************************
ELECTION BIO: LARRY PEGG

I've enjoyed playing Ultimate, together with my wife Angela,
since 1990 (Bodacious Cowboys and The Posse). Daughters Kelly(12)and
Stephanie(9) have grown up watching us from the sidelines and
soon, I hope they'll be playing with us.

My past contributions to the league include the following:
- Actively promoted the creation of the first 4-3 division in
  '92.
- Locating the current sod farm and negotiated the original
lease in '94. Given the difficulty in finding playable space
this was a major achievement without most you would not be
  playing Ultimate today.
- Loaned company equipment, time, landscape and construction
expertise to the league for various projects.
- Advisor to the Land Development Committee in 1997.
- Provided support to the Nationals committee including media,
transportation, and developing a green program for this and
  future events at the facility.
- As developer of the new sportsfields, secured at least $200,000.00
in tangible upgrade values to the facility through the Natural
Sports Turf Grass Research Project and associated sponsorships/grants.
  See Ecoview website at www.ecoview.com.
- Responsible for zoning amendment assistance in the pre-development
phase and ongoing negotiations with the Township authorities.
- Encouraged OCUA's adoption of a green philosophy allowing
for environmental certification program (Committed to Green).
- UP Inc. shareholder and an avid supporter - both philosophically
and financially - of the direction the league has taken in
  developing the Ultimate Sports Park.

The task of organizing and running this league is a large and
challenging one, done on a volunteer basis, and often with little
recognition. I believe the many years of experience running
my own company, as well as my love of the game and spirit of
Ultimate, would allow me to make a positive contribution to
the Board and to OCUA.

My vision for our league includes the following:
- Lined fields at the new facility to improve the safety, spirit,
time saving and profile of the sport.
- One single, consistent method for determining standings, play
off formats etc. This would reduce workload and confusion
  for team captains and coordinators.
- Prudent fiscal management to ensure OCUA can meet it's financial
obligations to its shareholders, mortgagees, and creditors
while not compromising quality development and management
  of the new facility.
- Revenue generation via rentals of the sportsfields, sponsorships
  and grants.
- Adherence to, and promotion of, the environmental commitments
made for the development and maintenance of fields.
- Promotion of the sport of Ultimate through Media, School Athletics
  programs, Juniors, etc.
- More open and frequent communications to OCUA league members.

As the developer of the new site, I intend to abstain from all
voting that may include my company. Good luck to all candidates.

ELECTION BIO: STEVE SEABROOK

I have been working in Ottawa for over two years as a Year 2000
analyst, software tester and technical writer for the Adga Group.
Before moving to Ottawa I played Ultimate in Fredericton, NB
for seven years.

Co-founder Fredericton Ultimate League - While playing in Fredericton
I co-founded the Fredericton Ultimate League, which has been
highly successful since my departure in expanding by 50%, hosting
four tourneys each year and has become the central force behind
Maritime Ultimate.

Divisional Coordinator - After moving to Ottawa in 1997, I quickly
began to play in the league. Soon Doug Tahirali had volunteered
me to run the Monday 4/3 lower tiers. It has continually expanded
to its present size of 7 tiers and 56 teams.

League Secretary - During the 1998 season the board of directors
invited me to participate as a non-voting member of the board.
After last year's elections, I was invited back as the league
secretary. Although I am not a director I have been honored
to work with this fanatically dedicated group of volunteers.

New Player Coordinator - I have also worked as the New Player
Coordinator and assisted in revamping the position to get a
list of players on the league web page.

Ottawa Open Tourney Director - Last year the Ottawa Disc Golf
Club built the first pole hole course in the region, I helped
install and maintain the course. After the new course was installed
I was quick to take up the challenge of organizing Ottawa annual
fall tourney, The Ottawa "Plaid Jacket" Open. This has been
a huge success and I am looking forward to running an even larger
event this fall.

Team captain - After playing in the Maritimes for most of my
career I am proud to captain this year's Maritime masters team
at Canadian Nationals. I am also the captain of two league teams
including a Monday 4/3 team and a new player Tuesday 4/3 team.

OCUA is a vibrant and exciting organization to work with, not
only because it's the largest league in the world but because
the potential of the league. OCUA needs strong and consistent
leadership from all its directors because of its financial and
organizational responsibilities. Not only does the league need
a director to show up for the meetings, but it must have dedicated
volunteers who are willing to spend vast amounts of time to
ensure the league operates smoothly. I have been working extensively
with the league for two years and my love for the sport has
not diminished, I do not expect this to change anytime soon.

OCUA is always in need of volunteers, please consider supplying
your league with a little help.

************************************************************
ELECTION BIO: JEFF RATHBURN

Hello everyone, my name is Jeff Rathburn and I'd like to be
a part of OCUA's Board of Directors. I've been playing Ultimate
for 3 years now; I started in the Vancouver Ultimate League
with Chuck & Die. I migrated back east last year and hooked
up with Team R.U.S.H. and this year decided to start up my own
team, Big, Strong & 18 Inches Long, as well as playing with
Who? Us? on Mondays. You may recognize me from those teams as
the "tall bastard in the yellow shirt".

I was married this past February (Hi Jawsy), and got my wife
involved in the sport as well. Right now, she is finishing up
her computer science program, so in the meantime I figured it
was the perfect opportunity to help out OCUA. I want to help
ensure a healthy future for OCUA and its players by doing such
things as instituting a rules clinic for lower tiered teams
as well as improving communication between the Board and its
players.

I wanted to take a more hands on approach in the league this
year. I feel I have done that by co-ordinating the Monday 5/2
league, participating in the Sharing Through Scoring program
with the Flying Flamingoes ($210 raised as I type this), and
even such little things as helping to pound all those parking
posts in the ground at the Sod Farm (which have since been all
knocked over:). Being elected to OCUA's Board of Directors would
be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

I feel I can do an excellent job of representing OCUA's players,
making the league even more enjoyable to participate in, and
ensuring that we are the top Ultimate league in the world.
