We will teach you the basic throws like the pop, push, hammer, scoober, thumb hammer, blade, hiawatha and theresa lafargeville, and if we have time we can show you the forehand and backhand. We will also work on defense, cutting, and game strategy. Players of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend from beginners to old, slow veterans who want to contribute more to their team than just a cheer and throwing the first pass. This year we have decided to run the clinics on Friday evenings instead of Sunday afternoons. Let us know what you think of the change. The first clinic will take place on Friday, May 19th at 6:15 pm at the Riverside fields. Check Ultimate Happenings for future dates. ************************************************************ STELLA'S WOMEN'S SKILLS CLINIC: Ever want to learn how to throw that sweet inside-out flick, make an unstoppable cut, play shut-down defence, or learn to lay-out?! How about just a clarification of what is a stack, a mark or a force...... Well, then come out to Stella's Ultimate Women's Clinic. Back by popular demand, Stella, one of Ottawa's travelling women's Ultimate team, will be holding their Annual Women's Skills Clinic on Friday May 26th and Sunday May 28th at Lynda Lane. Beginners: Friday May 26 (6:30 - 8:30 pm) Intermediate: Sunday May 28 (3:00 - 5:00 pm) Location: Lynda Lane (if field conditions are ok) Friday night is geared towards first year players. We will be going over throwing techniques, different ways of cutting, how to mark your defender, analysis of man-to-man/zone, and techniques on how to lay out without injury! Sunday afternoon is for those intermediate players who want to improve their game by learning new types of throws (inside outs, outside in's, high back hand releases, hammers, scubbers, you name it!), different cutting techniques (boulders, L cuts, T cuts, big city... plus many more), new offence strategies, tips on smart defence, and overall improving you and your teams awareness on the field. Those of you who had really planned on playing in the Tune-up to get your team in shape can look to the Layout for Life Cancer Tourney as a possible option. It will be taking place on May 27th, and is a one-day 4/3 tourney, with proceeds being donated to Cancer research. Thanks Mike e: mharley@sympatico.ca ************************************************************ URGENT, NATIONALS NEWS: Please check out the note below that Brian Gisel (2000 Nationals TD) sent to currently registered captains. Especially note the fact that Brian is considering DECREASING the number of open spots in the tournament since there hasn't been much interest from open teams. I have heard rumors that as many as FIVE Toronto Open teams want to play Nationals, but so far only two have shown interest. If you want to play Nationals (in any division) you had better register before May 31 - that's when Brian and CUPA will decide the final numbers for each division. If there are still only seven open teams at that point then don't expect a large division. John Harris ----------------------------------- On May 15, 2000, Brian Gisel wrote: The deadline for registration at Nationals 2000 is drawing near! The following is an updated list of all teams that have expressed an interest in attending the tournament. As always, we want to keep spreading the news about registration. Please take a few moments to pass this e-mail along to Captains and players in your area who may be considering putting a team into one of the five divisions at this years Nationals. At this time, we are looking to adjust the division sizes based on the Interest shown by teams. Coed and Women's teams are showing strong interest. Open has less teams at this point, however there are 6 BC Open teams gearing up and we expect to be hearing from them, and long time Nationals participants from Winnipeg and Ottawa, soon. We would like to run 16 teams in the Open, Women's and Coed divisions, while Juniors and Masters look like they will be in the 8-12 team range. As of May 15th, all teams who have expressed an interest are looking good to get a spot in Nationals. However, this doesn't mean that seeding the teams isn't important. This will help us with creating a balanced schedule, and a last minute rush of teams may still mean that we will not have enough room for everyone. BC Coed, BC Women's, Ontario Coed, Ontario Open and Alberta Open teams should start thinking about seedings. In some cases the Captains may agree on the team rankings, but in others there may need to be a mini-tournament to come up with rankings. Any such tournaments should be completed no later than the June 10th-11th weekend. By that time regional allocations will have been announced and teams who qualify for Nationals can take the last few days before the June 16th deadline to make sure their team fees have been sent in and their registration is complete.
