NOTES:

  Speed Traps:

Over the last few weeks the police have been setting up
speed traps on the way out to the fields south of the
city. Instead of trying to outsmart them please obey the
posted speed limits. The people's houses you are speeding
by are also our neighbors and we want to keep them happy.

  --------------
UP Inc Annual General Meeting Is Postponed:

It will be rescheduled for the fall, probably the Friday
  before Fr'equinox.

  --------------
  Please Carpool To No Borders:

Due to limited parking at UP Inc we encourage all Ottawa
players to carpool to the tourney this weekend. For more
  info on this see below.

  --------------
  Dogs:

Please clean up after your dogs at our sites. This means
you should take the plastic bag full of doggy crap home
with you instead of leaving it beside a stake in the parking
lot. (Editor's Note: I think this should be obvious but...)

  --------------
  Warning:

We have had at least one case of people breaking in to cars
and stealing items at Lynda Lane.

NO BORDERS TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND!:

When:
Saturday/Sunday, July 15/16th

Where:
UP Inc. Fields, 1295 Manotick Station Road

Contact:
Keith Whyte (237-4689)

This year marks the 16th anniversary of Ottawa's premiere
Ultimate tournament, No Borders. 34 Open and 16 Womens' teams
from across the NE US and Canada will be vying for this year's
championship. It's a great chance to see how the game is
played at higher levels, and we encourage all of you to come
out, enjoy the fun, and support the Ottawa competitive ultimate
teams. Games will run from approximately 10am to 6pm on Saturday,
and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Please note that due to limited parking at UP Inc and in
in an effort to encourage car pooling, and in a way to generate
some funds for the national juniors team, there will be a scaled
parking fee as follows:
full car - free
3 people - 1 dollar
2 people - 3 dollars
1 person - 5 dollars

Proceeds from parking will go directly to supporting the
Canadian national juniors team participating at this year's
World Championships in Germany.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING ON THE ROAD!

2nd ANNUAL WOMEN'S HAT TOURNAMENT FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH:

Here is an opportunity to play WITH some of the women you have
been playing against all this time. (No men in drag please)
Remember how much fun this was last year? All the more reason
to sign up with a friend this year!

Saturday, July 22nd, we will be holding our second annual
WOMEN'S HAT TOURNAMENT at the Sod Farm in Manotick. We will
be limiting teams to 10-12 players each and will be trying
our best to keep them balanced with an equal skill level,
dividing up the cheer writers, rule czarinas and spirit
queens amongst the teams.

We ask that you make your interest known by July 17th to give
us enough time to organize the event properly.

Please contact Diana Nunes at 841-6859 or nunes@sprint.ca
or Manon des Groseilliers at 791-3608 or mdesg@cyberus.ca

We require the following from you...

NO PARKING ON THE ROAD AT THE SOD FARM:

Hi all. This is the part of the field manager's job that I
don't like but here goes anyway because there are obviously
some people out there who just aren't listening. While most
of the League players are wonderfully cooperative, some people
--and I'm going to hope that we're dealing with individuals
just don't know better--appear to be less so.

On Monday, July 10, there were cars parked on Spratt Road,
next to the Sod Farm. These likely belonged to players whose
teams had been assigned one of the fields closest the road.
Please park in the designated parking area and walk the couple
of hundred yards to your pitch. It's not that onerous a task,
when you consider all the running you'll be doing in your game.

I'm going to be very nice about this but the next time it
happens I'm going to do my level best to have you towed. Yeah,
I know. I'm being a hard ass. But the reality is that our
situation at the Sod Farm is tenuous at best and we need all
the local goodwill we can muster if we're going to have a
chance to renew our agreement with Mr. Petersen. We cannot
afford to lose 16 fields since we've no way to make up for
such a shortfall.

If you didn't know this was the case--and please, folks, pass
this on because it's very important--then it's no biggie. Just
don't do it again. If you do know the rules and you were too
freaking lazy to walk then I dare you to do it again, because
I really will get you towed. THERE IS NO PARKING ON SPRATT
ROAD!!! There, 'nuff said. Have a great remainder to the season.

Eric.

THIS WEEKS SATURDAY PICKUP IS CANCELLED:

Hello everyone,

Though I was not in town last Saturday, John tells me that new
players and new faces showed up to play some pickup. I'm sure
it was a great day for it, too!

After much debate, I have decided that I will not organize
pickup for this coming Saturday (July 15th). As many of you
know, No Borders is at UP Inc this weekend; I anticipate
that many of you are playing in the tourney and therefore will
not be able to make it out for pickup. For those of you who
are not playing at No Borders, it is an excellent opportunity
to get out and see some pretty good games. I encourage you all
to get out and take in some of the action! If you don't know
how to get to UP Inc, you can check out the league's web site
(www.ocua.ca) for directions; if you want more info about the
tourney, check out www.ocua.ca/tournaments/noborders

I hope that you are not too disappointed for this last-minute
cancellation. Pickup will be back the following week (July
22nd). I hope you all have a great weekend!

Sonia

RULE OF THE WEEK:

by Sylvie D'Aoust

This week we'll be talking about Stall Counts. I think that
everybody will experience this frustration at some point in
your Ultimate career. I know I have on many occasions. The
question is when is the disc really counted down, because the
offensive player will more likely then not call a Fast Count
(sound familiar) on you or the offensive player will have
released the disc milliseconds after the "T" in ten is uttered,
which clearly results in a turnover, as we will soon read.
Maddening isn't it, this rule is always the cause of much
debate, screaming matches and frustration.

XIV. The Marker

Stalling:
The count consists of the marker calling "STALLING" or
"COUNTING" and counting at one second intervals intervals from
one to ten (1,10) loudly enough for the thrower to hear. If
the thrower has not released the disc at the first utterance
of the word "TEN" (10), a turnover is the result. The thrower
may contest a stall call if s/he feels that s/he had released
the disc before the first utterance of the word "TEN". In the
event of a contested stall, if the pass is completed play
stops and possession reverts back to the thrower. After a
check, the marker starts the stall count at 8. In the event
of a contest stall, if the pass is incomplete, it is a turnover
and play continues without interruption.
