From 18 teams in 1990, OCUA now has well over 200 teams in the league. However, because of this massive growth, and because this growth will undoubtedly continue in the years ahead as Ottawa-Carleton continues to boom, OCUA will increasingly find itself unable to meet increasing demand due to a lack of useable fields. Already, field space is at a premium. If we cannot find additional fields, OCUA will not be able to grow in the future, and may not be able to even accommodate its current size. As a result, OCUA is putting in place an action plan with the goal of securing additional fields. In order for such a plan to succeed, it will require a volunteer organizational committee whose job would be to see that the strategy is carried out. The main functions of the members of this committee would be to identify possible fields (corporate areas, school fields, public parks, for-sale plots of land, public areas that could be converted to fields, etc.), and to formulate an appropriate communications strategy to ask that these areas be used as Ultimate fields. We could also use the opportunity of municipal/ school board elections this fall as a lobbying and media "hook" into raising public awareness over the need for more fields in the region. I'm sure that this will prove to be an interesting, and hopefully, successful initiative. If you're interested in taking part, please contact Jeff Morrison by e-mail (jmorriso@aucc.ca) or leave a message (565-5353) by September 1. Please provide a phone number and e-mail address. An initial meeting will be organized in early September to get the ball rolling. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you! Jeff Morrison ************************************************************ OTTAWA CURSE OPEN PRACTICES: Greetings, This is an open invitation to anyone interested in playing competitive Ultimate next year. We will be holding practices every Thursday, starting August 10th, for the remainder of the summer. Based on the level on interest we will continue this into the fall. The location will be the Sod Farm for the next few weeks until we can find an in-city field after summer league finals. We are looking for all types of experience, from beginners to seasoned vet's. If this is your first year, please do not underestimate yourself. The Ottawa Ultimate community has a lot of untapped talent, basically, we want to get to know who you are and provide you with an opportunity to play some competitive Ultimate. Pass the word and get your friends out. Please bring a black and a light shirt. If you have any questions, you can contact me by email: (eric.budgell@ec.gc.ca) or by phone 613-747-2789. Cheers Eric Budgell (OttawaCurse) ************************************************************ RULE OF THE WEEK: by Sylvie D'Aoust Ah my second request to have a rule explained in layman's terms. If ever there is a discrepancy over a particular rule during a game let me know. :) The rule in question is that of the player's best perspective "in" call. This is just one of those calls that sometimes the sidelines can't not get involved in. XV. The Receiver 8. If it is ever unclear where a receiver was in or out-of- bounds at the point of making the catch, the player(s) with the best perspective makes the call. IX. Out of Bounds 1. Any area not on the playing field is out-of -bounds. The perimeter lines themselves are out-of-bounds. 5. For a receiver to be considered in bounds after gaining possession of the disc, the first point of contact with the ground must be completed in-bounds. If any portion of the first contact is out-of-bounds, the player is considered out-of-bounds. 6. Should the momentum of a player carry him/her out-of-bounds after making an in-bounds catch, the player is considered in-bounds. The player carries the disc to the point where s/he went out-of-bounds and puts the disc into play at that point. A. Observers 2. When a dispute arises concerning a foul, violation, pick, line call, or an interpretation of the rules which cannot be resolved by asking the captains to make a call, A. The observers with the best view of the play make the call. If the observers so choose, they may discuss the play among themselves before rendering a decision. B. By calling the observers, the team agrees to abide by the observers decisions. We all know what happens when team mates other then those on the field get involved in disputes during the game…. a whole lot of bickering. In my opinion, the player with the disc makes the last call, whether s/he is in or not (unless it's quite obvious). This however will be reflective in your spirit ratings. Remember that Ultimate is a spirit game, if a decision cannot be made it's always a good spirit call to send the disc back to the initial thrower and continue the play. Good spirit, bad spirit, good calls and bad calls the unwritten rule dictates that Ultimate should not to be played for the sole reason of getting that advantage over the other team, through questionable calls that is. Play fair. If you want to hear about some bad calls, I'll tell you about men's semi's at Nationals.
