Robin is always out there, laying it on the line whether slumming it with her Tuesday team (love 'ya babe) or cranking it up for the top tiers on other nights and weekends. Robin parties so hard, that we sometimes forget the "work hard" part that dwells beneath. As a coordinator, she spends the bulk of her day organizing, planning, trouble shooting and problem solving for five projects. As a player, she's shown a long-standing commitment to the league and its development. Robin is a big believer in volunteerism. Most recently, she's been working as the league's Media Relations Officer. She managed to scoop coverage for the Nationals in '99, the No Borders tournament last month and was involved with the most recent Board of Director's response to the Sod Farm zoning crisis. She's also written and begun the implementation of a three-year communications plan for OCUA. She believes that internal and external communication is going to be critical if our league is going to stay successful. Improved internal communication will help to bridge the widening gap between the board and our 3000+ members. Increased external communication will help improve our image in the community. If the community knows who we are, what we do and how much we can contribute, the fields we need will be easier to acquire. Robin realizes that there are players who would like to step up, help out and get more involved. As a board member, she'd like to help organize an effective way for the players and teams who are interested in volunteering to feel valued and involved in the running of their league. As someone who's having a blast doing more, she makes a great advocate for others to get involved as well. Robin: "I've been a member of OCUA for five years. I've played both competitively and socially, indoors and outdoors and during every season of the year. I've had the opportunity to witness first hand how much our league has grown and changed over the past few years. I would really appreciate the opportunity to give back to the sport and represent you on the Board of Directors." Paid for by the Campaign to Elect (and Continue Carpooling) with Robin Ken Lange ========= General Background Born and raised in rural Alberta, I attended the University of Alberta and received my B.Sc. in Zoology/Botany, and several years later another B.Sc. in Computer Science. After working as an Environmental Testing Technician, Alberta Park Ranger, and finally as a Natural History Interpreter, I moved to Ottawa in 1995 to work for Nortel doing software development, and got hooked on ultimate OCUA Involvement President (Sep. 2000-present) OCUA Board of Directors (Sept. 1998-present) UP Inc. Board of Directors (1997-present) OCUA Structure Committee (1998) OCUA Share Sales Committee (1997) OCUA Webmaster/Web Team Leader (1997-1999) 13th Canadian Nationals Organizing Committee (1999) No Borders Tournament Volunteer (1999-present) Spring Tuneup Tournament Co-Director, (1997-1999) Teams: Dick & Jane Layout, Wed 5/2 (1995-present), Outlaws, Mon/Tue 4/3 (1996-1997, captain), Girlie Drink Drunks, Mon 43 (1997-2000), Sweet Daddy Whup Ass, Mon 43 (2001), Voodoo Lovedolls, open competitive (1997- 1999),Curse, open competitive (2000-present) OCUA Vision As a member of the Board of Directors, and this year as President, I have always been committed to trying to improve how OCUA functions as an organization, and that remains my focus. Ultimate in Ottawa has experienced phenomenal growth over a relatively short period of time, and that has made it difficult for us to keep up. This was especially true while we were building our UP Inc. facility, when so much of our efforts had to be channeled into that monumental project to the exclusion of almost everything else. While I feel that the results of that project have been excellent, we are still feeling the after effects in other areas. My goal is to address these issues. At this time, I see four general areas for improvement which are critical to our long term success: - League growth / field space concerns - Financial issues (day to day management & long- term stability) - League/tournament operations & communications - Public/Community relations In order to successfully manage these problems, we as an organization need to be proactive something we've been trying to achieve for some time now, unfortunately with only limited success. In the last year, however, I believe that we have started to make headway. Our biggest step has been the hiring of a contractor to deal with what is now, like it or not, the big business of ultimate. Having someone paid to handle the monumental amount of day-to- day administration of a league this size is critical if we are to move forward both as a league and as a sport. We've also started to improve the overall organization of the leagues, as well as communications with our members. We're getting on the right track, but there is no doubt in my mind that we still have much to do. I am committed to our continuing down that path, and to ensuring that we maintain the spirit of ultimate while doing so. Thanks, and please encourage your team to seriously consider all the candidates, and to vote responsibly. This is YOUR organization, and it is what YOU make it. Cheers! Luc Langelier ============= A passion for ultimate. I started playing ultimate in a North Bay high school back in 1988. Many years have passed since then and things have changed quite a bit; forehand is now my most accurate throw and suddenly the city is working with us for in-city fields. Some things never change; I still can't layout and OCUA needs you to vote. OCUA Involvement Teams: Turf Toads, Mon 4/3; Catcher in the Sky, Tue 4/3; Pick One, Wed 4/3 Spoke on behalf of OCUA at the Aug 9th Council Mtg (2001) Layout for Life Tournament Volunteer (2001) Successfully campaigned to convince BoD of the requirement for an Employee (2000) Member of the Fields Committee (2000) OCUA Web Team member (1997) Ideas I'm putting forward. Volunteer rewards: I would like to see more people keen on volunteering. One resolution I would like to see adopted is more rewards for those who volunteer. There are many resources available to OCUA that can be "borrowed" or "extended" to volunteers that would cost OCUA little or nothing. I would personally devote myself to finding new ways to reward volunteers for their efforts. Change OCUA Bylaws: OCUA's bylaws need to be reviewed. They were adopted when the league was a mere 200 strong and need to be re-examined. One of these changes would consist of adopting the General Manager as president of the board. Changes to come. Aside from fields being a major continuing concern, my second priority would have to be league spirit. Communication is no longer a problem. We have a web page, email that reaches all our members and an open forum where anyone can get insightful information. The information is being communicated - people just aren't listening. You're still reading? Good, I need your vote! They don't care because after the punch clock has sounded, its time to relax. It's time to focus on 'personal issues' and 'OCUA issues' are like issues of the Middle East complicated and distant. When OCUA needs to fix an issue, they can send all the email and put up all the web pages they want, but if people don't take notice . . . it becomes a problem. This problem gets amplified when you have people zooming down Manotick Station Rd, pulling donuts in our parking lots and parking along Spratt Rd. Our next initiative should be fighting apathy. The spirit of OCUA needs to be raised. Everyone needs to get involved. Not just involved in a sport, involved in a league. It is not my position however, to tell you what opinion you should have. It is not me who will even tell you, that you should even have an opinion concerning OCUA. I can't tell you what to think, or how to think about it. That's up to you. All I can do is tell you honestly what I think. Tell you how I feel about specific issues and provide ideas around issues. What I can do is have an opinion, raise issues and engage discussion on a topic. I can discuss it openly and accept differing opinions then sit back and see how the majority is swaying. This league needs to have more passion for the league and I can help, I can help because I can lead by example. I can be passionate about ultimate - And that is my promise to you the voter. Dean Manning ============ - Monday 5/2 division co-ordinator - former Men's League co-ordinator - OCUA league member since 1994 - Captain of 3 summer league teams - Fall and Winter league participant - UPI shareholder ( 10 shares ) - UPI site maintenance volunteer - Ottawa Disc Golf Course shareholder - Course maintenance volunteer - No Borders tournament set-up volunteer - New Fields Search committee volunteer - Ottawa High School Ultimate Coach If you have any questions on my views or opinions feel free to contact me at 992-2695 or email at dean.manning@pwgsc.gc.ca Russell McDonnell ================= Hi, my name is Russ McDonnell, I have been living in Ottawa on and off for the last 15 years. I am a graduate of Ottawa University ( B. Comm.) and am currently working as an Investment Advisor for Royal Bank Financial Group. I have been playing Ultimate for six years now and out of all the activities I am involved in this is by far my favourite! OCUA is one of the city's finest sports leagues and I want to contribute my time and energy to help ensure it stays that way. Over the past several years I have played on and captained many teams, mainly Wed 4-3 with Drunk 24:7. I have played both 5-2 and 4-3 on a number of different nights. I have organized several teams for various tournaments and participated in No Borders, Nationals, etc. Recently I have helped organize and run some Ultimate clinics at local elementary schools (some of those kids are good!) to help promote the sport with the younger generation. In the past I have been involved in organizing intramural sports leagues at both University and High School levels. My vision for OCUA involves a few key points. First of all, I think the league has grown to a point where our focus should shift from growing the league to making it better and ensuring that we have permanent and quality fields for all league members to play on. Long-term use of the Sod Farm is likely not an option and I believe finding convenient in-city sports fields should be a priority. To this end one of my goals is to continue to lobby city council and others to get them onside in finding new fields and encouraging growth of the sport in a sustainable manner. I think growing the league is still important but I think quality is more important than quantity; does anyone truly enjoy playing at ankle-breaker fields like Orlando and Stanley Park? Another priority for OCUA that I see is raising the overall profile of the sport in Ottawa. This will help the league gain greater respect and support by community residents and politicians alike. As many of you have seen with the Sod debate, political allies can be a powerful thing. How can we do this? Getting on local talk radio CBC, the Team, etc.., continuing to run clinics in local schools, kids league, increasing involvement in local events (demo games etc..). Being a member of the Board of Directors is a big commitment and I am ready to dedicate the time and effort required to do the job well. I believe the skills I have developed during my working career combined with my passion for the sport will enable me to make a positive contribution to the future of OCUA. See you on the fields! Andy Morrisey ============= My name is Andrew (Andy) Morrisey and I was born in Ottawa on December 6th 1973. I have lived in Ottawa for half my life, and spent the rest in New Dehli, Geneva, and Washington DC as a result of my father being with Foreign Affairs. I feel very passionate about this league from which I have derived so much enjoyment over the years and feel that I could greatly contribute to furthering the success of this great organization. My ideas, my experience within the league as both a player and coordinator and my background in finance, management, and marketing would be a definite asset to OCUA. I have been involved with OCUA for 6 years, playing on NUTS, CURSE, and recently as a League Coordinator and as a member of the OCUA Communications Committee. In my free time, I am involved with the Ottawa Disc Golf Association. I would like to take the lead on OCUA's sales and marketing operations. The implementation of various marketing initiatives, while producing greater revenues, will also improve public visibility thereby supporting the key objectives of the communications plan currently being developed. With increased revenue, and a greater public understanding of what OCUA is all about, the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association will be better positioned to grow as a permanent, legitimate and valued member of the Ottawa athletic community. Thank you for your time. Andy Morrisey Deb Murphy ========== I have been involved in Ultimate since 1994 as a league player, competitive player, team captain, OCUA treasurer, winter league coordinator, CUPA rep and OCUA Director. In my spare time I work with an environmental consulting firm where I focus on environmental policy, international business development and management of international projects. As a Board member up for re-election, I have thought long and hard before deciding to run again. We have made significant progress in the past two years. For example, we have hired a contract employee to act as general manager for the league. This was a significant achievement to alleviate the time commitment and stress of the Board members, who are volunteers. (And I ask you as OCUA members to keep this in mind. Suggestions and constructive criticism are always welcome, but negative complaints tend to turn away our most valuable asset our volunteers.) Another achievement is the agreement reached with the city to extend the temporary rezoning of the Sod Farm for two years, during which time the City will work with us to find 16 replacement fields (for which OCUA will decommission fields at the Sod Farm on a quid pro quo basis). As well, UP Inc. continues to improve and provides the best Ultimate fields in the city. Kudos to the Land Cell for their continuous efforts. But, there are still many areas where OCUA can improve. Hence, I decided to run again. My goals for the Board over the next two years are: - To work with the City to secure the 16 fields to replace the Sod Farm, maintain good relations with the City of Ottawa and keep Ultimate in the forefront as the new amalgamated City of Ottawa undertakes long-term recreational planning. - To focus on the quality of our leagues, as opposed to quantity. The continued rapid rate of growth of the league will be difficult, if not impossible, to maintain and we need to consider controlled growth that meets the needs of our members. - To establish long-term directions for OCUA, including the development of a business and financial plan. - To encourage environmentally sound management of UP Inc. and other playing fields. - To maintain positive relationships with the broader community, including outreach to our neighbors and increased involvement with charities. - To improve the management and organization of the Association and the leagues. - To introduce a nomination process for the election of the Board of Directors. - To establish positive and mutually beneficial relationships between OCUA and the competitive Ultimate teams. - To showcase UP Inc. through the hosting of the Canadian National Ultimate Championships. A long list but doable with the right people. I ask that you vote responsibly and think about your choices. OCUA is a business and needs board members with the skills, experiences and integrity to allow us to function as a business. Lauren Wardell ============== Hello all: My name is Lauren Wardell. I've been an Ultimate player for about six years now and decided to get serious about my involvement in this league a year ago. I never really felt I had the time to contribute until last winter when I volunteered to captain a team in the Saturday night developmental league. That led to more and more opportunities for me to help out, whether it was getting media coverage for the Matterhorn Matt tournament or transporting b.b.q's for Layout for Life. I wanted to help where it was needed. Currently I am one of 3 co-ordinators for the Monday 4/3 league, responsible for tiers 6,7,8 and 9. Working as a co-ordinator has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of folks out there playing on Monday nights. I've tried to help the members of these teams; acting as a link from the players to the Board, working as an mediator when conflicts arise and making sure that everyone is playing at the skill level that they want and need. My vision of the future of OCUA is like a wheel with many spokes. All equally bearing the weight and deserving the attention of the Board of Directors and the membership. Focussed on not just one major issue, but giving consideration, time and talent to all the issues that confront us such as: * putting a public face on our League as responsible, caring, contributing members of our community * finding solutions to crises like the loss of SOD farm * League expansion - how can we work to meet the needs our players? * Volunteer recruitment - how and who. Currently I work in Marketing at Statistics Canada and I am the mother of an ultimate playing nine year old, Jackson. I was fortunate this summer to coach in our fledgling Kid's League and meet the children of many of my team-mates and friends. Jackson played this summer and I look forward to watching him improve as he grows up. I encourage players with children to get them involved in our Kid's League because, in my experience, a shared passion for Ultimate has built a stronger bond between my son and I. Jackson may never play for waX or go to the World Championships but he IS the future of the sport. I want to sit on the board so that I can do my part to ensure that all our children have a bright future in this sport. Thank you, Lauren Wardell Jack Webb ========= Well this year I am not going to catalogue my accomplishments with OCUA or with Ultimate in general from the last 10 years. I have done some good things for OCUA and Ultimate development in the past, I am currently doing good things for OCUA and Ultimate development in the present and I will continue to do good things for Ultimate and OCUA in the future. It does not really matter if I am voted on to the BoD as I will always continue to promote this sport I love. Given the list of candidates I can assure you that there are many good people to chose from this year. So choose wisely. That is all. Marko Zarkovic ============== About Myself I was born and raised in Toronto but am in no way responsible for Mel Lastman. I studied translation, linguistics and literature at York University (Glendon College and York main campus) and -- after moving to Ottawa in 1996 -- computer science at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. I work for Cognos as a software engineer. In previous career incarnations, I have been a graphic artist and illustrator, student advisor at the Ministry of Education's correspondence-course school, and writer for the Premier of Ontario (Rae and Harris governments). In my spare time I play you-know-what. My other interests and hobbies are fitness, writing and reading, art and music, and instigating positively-charged mayhem. Past Involvement in OCUA I have been involved as player and team captain. I've usually played on at least two summer teams and one fall team. I also played indoor Ultimate the winter before last. My current teams (in order of weekday) are Hell's Gazelles, Blue Me, Fabulous Flying Flamingos, and the G-String Assassins. How I Would Like to Help As a BoD member I'd like to work to - strengthen OCUA's relationships with our fellow citizens, politicians and businesses by increasing their awareness of the sport, making them understand the benefits of Ultimate and its importance to Ottawa culture, and finding strategies to change any negative perceptions - update and re-organize the Web site to provide a better "virtual tour" of the OCUA community and what Ultimate means to Ottawa - use the online system in new ways -- for example, sending mail to captains about games: where, who, restrictions, whether anyone playing on either team has first-aid training - devise an effective car-pooling program that would reward pooling teams - encourage and reward volunteerism -- our membership is our strength, but we need more members to contribute One of the new BoD's main tasks will be to find fields to replace the Sod Farm when the temporary rezoning expires. I favour controlling the growth of OCUA until we have secured new replacement fields and have a plan for future expansion beyond these fields. Ultimate is one of the main reasons why I think Ottawa is a wonderful place to live. I'm grateful to the people who have worked so hard to build our Ultimate community, and I feel it's time for me to do my part for OCUA. ************************************************************ WOMEN'S FALL LEAGUE A LA PROUF: It's Hot Hot Hot out there so it's time to start dreaming about Fall League.
