REGISTER FOR KID'S ULTIMATE LEAGUE
We're approaching the start of the summer sports season and
the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association's Kid's Ultimate
League is looking forward to another good year.
Last year approximately 40 children participated in the
Kid's League for 9-12 year olds, heading out every Thursday
to play Ultimate Frisbee at the Manotick Station Ultimate
Park. Each night involved a warm-up and stretch, a couple of
practice drills, and 45-60 minutes of game time. The
coaching focus was on having fun, developing athletic
skills, playing together as a team, and especially on the
spirit of the game.
Highlights of last year's season involved a three-week
assessment period at the beginning of the season while the
children were divided into equal-strength teams, round-robin
play throughout the season, and a fun-day at the end of the
year where the children tested their hard-won disc skills in
four challenging contests.
The first couple of sessions featured a rubber chicken,
which was intended to equalize the "disc skills" of the
players while the basic rules of the game were being taught.
They also featured a shortened field, but very quickly the
players improved their skills and grew into a regular sized
field. By the end of the season, the games were fast-paced
and exciting, involving all of the plays that make ultimate
so much fun: layouts, hucks, skying for discs. Especially
fun were the weekly cheers, which tested the creative talent
of coaches and players alike, and always produced something
to laugh at and enjoy!
This year Kid's Ultimate will be expanding to two divisions:
a Kid's League for 9-12 year olds and a Teen League for 13-
15 year olds. The leagues run from 6-8pm every Thursday
between May 16th and July 25th. Registration costs are $60
per player, which includes field time, resources, and a free
disc and team T-shirt for each child.
If you would like to register your child to play in the
Kid's Ultimate League, please call Karen Lange at 821-2183
or email kids@ocua.ca - act now because spots are going
fast!

TRYOUTS FOR GLU
GLU is a strong traveling open team, with some experienced
players, out to be competitive and to have fun playing
Ultimate, in a positive environment for the development of
all team members.
GLU is looking forward to another exciting competitive
season, and looking at improving on last year's results that
included a tie for 3rd at Rochester, and 8th at Nationals.
Practices, involving lots of scrimmage, are going to be once
a week (Tuesdays), with optional get-togethers on Thursdays
to work on skills, conditioning, scrimmages, etc, and maybe
the odd weekend scrimmage. We are going to TUT, JazzFest, No
Borders and Nationals (Ottawa), and 2 optional tournaments
(Solstice and Rochester) if the interest is there. GLU just
got word it has been granted a spot for the open division at
World Clubs in Hawaii, and while a commitment to going to
Hawaii is not required to make GLU, being on the team will
go a long way to getting you on the roster for Worlds.
Tryouts will be Tuesday April 16 in the evening at an Ottawa
U field (exact location and time to follow), tentatively
April 21 at a field to be determined, and potentially April
25 if required.
Please send an email to glu_2002@hotmail.com to express your
interest, especially those that have not spoken to anybody
from last year's team, or if you have any questions.
Tuesday April 16 Tryout date
We're pretty sure we have the Ottawa U field from 8 to 10 PM
(Check the open forum to see if a correction is posted). Be
there for 7:30 so you can get cleated and warmed up, and
bring a white and a dark shirt.
Directions to Ottawa U Sports Complex (plagiarized for the
Fuse website - thanks :)). Corner of Kind Edward and
Templeton. If you are going south on Kind Edward it`s right
after the University at the bottom of the hill on your
right. Blue, red and beige building. You can also come from
Greenbank and turn left on Kind Edward and the building is
right there. Parking there is expensive. We (Fuse) suggest
you park in the streets; after 7 it's free. If you turn onto
Templeton you should be able to find a spot near there.
There are change rooms and facilities inside the building.
Please don`t wear your cleats inside.
The fields are rented, so the cost per person will be about
$5 depending on the numbers.
