DANGEROUS PLAY, ETC.
Recently I have had a number of incidents reported to me
that all seem to follow a similar, and to me at least, quite
disturbing trend. If I might paraphrase what I am being told:
"We played this team last night and they were all really
nice and played carefully, and all knew the rules, except
for this one (or two) player(s). They were rude, dangerous,
careless, unknowledgeable about the rules, etc. Other than
this one (or two) player(s) everything was OK so we gave
them a 9 for spirit, but wanted you to know that there was a
problem."
If this sounds like the sort of logic your team has been
employing to decide SOTG, or if you have such a player on a
team you play for, and you are not doing anything about it,
then you are part of the whole 'Dangerous Play' problem OCUA
is trying to solve. Why should the fact that 95% of the team
is fine diminish the effects of a 'bad apple'. It is the
responsibility of an entire team to ensure that each and
everyone of their team mates plays to the same high
standard. If they knowingly play with a team mate that is
prone to dangerous/reckless play, then they deserve to share
in the low SOTG that player should be generating.
Face it, members of the Association are being hurt by these
individuals, and not being attacked by entire teams. So to
use the argument that "the rest of the team was great!" is
really not a valid one for giving high SOTG ratings. How
does the Captain of the team with the dangerous player deal
with them when that player can point to the fact that things
couldn't have been that bad because a good SOTG was given?
The course of action that should be occurring if you have
concerns about a player, is approach the other team's
Captain, ask them to speak to the player in question. If
they are unwilling or unable to effect any change, and the
dangerous play continues, approach them once more and ask
that the player be spoken to once again. Indicate that if
the dangerousness continues you want the player benched or
your team will call the game.
The safety of your players comes before all else; you don't
have to wait for an injury to act, any more than a player
has to be hit to call dangerous play. Until teams get
serious about using SOTG and the complaint process to 'weed
out' these 'bad apples', there is little that OCUA can do.
Nick.
