MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings fellow ultimate players. I'd like to introduce
myself. For those of you that don't know me, my name is Steve
Ott, your new president of OCUA as voted in by your board of
directors in January. I've been a player in the league since
1989 and was on the board previously in the mid 1990's. As
well, I was a Monday night coordinator for numerous years
and the co-organizer of the annual Britannia Beach
tournament since 1992.

When elected to the board over a year ago there were several
issues I wanted to work on. In this upcoming year I hope to
address many of them and to help define the future
directions our league will take. Foremost and quite
important to the board is communications. Communications
from the board to the members and communications from the
members to the board. In addition to encouraging you to
contact any member of the board at any time if you have any
questions, you may also contact me directly at
president@ocua.ca. To further help our communications we are
also planning to start a new area on our new website
entitled "Questions to the Board" where we can have open and
frank discussions about different aspects of the league.

As you all know our league is run pretty much by just
volunteers. To that extent we are always looking for more
volunteers and I encourage all of you to get out and help the
league whenever positions are posted and to come out and
volunteer. Our next big upcoming event is the annual general
meeting on April 15th. I hope that each of your teams will
have a representative there and to come out and meet your new
board of directors. After that there's only a few more weeks
till the summer season starts!

Steve Ott

OCUA VISION STATEMENT

As the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association (OCUA) has grown
over the years, and has acquired the property at UPI it has
become necessary to review the vision statement of the
league. The original vision statement has become outdated.
The Board of Directors has reviewed the old Vision Statement
and come up with a new, more comprehensive Vision Statement,
which can be read below.

Members of the Association are asked to give their feedback
to Gavin Thompson gavint@istar.ca

The key to a good vision statement is that it be broad in
its scope, while not claiming to do things that the
Association does not actually do, nor would ever want to do.
It should be concise and to the point and should instil a
certain level of pride.

OCUA's primary function is to provide league Ultimate to the
residents of the National Capital Region. It is a secondary
function is to support the growth of and to develop the
sport of Ultimate in the NCR. It's is only due to its size
and foresight that OCUA can be seen as a leader in the
promotion and development of the sport of Ultimate.
Promotion can happen within OCUA and throught other
organizations, such as charities, public and private schools,
and the local media.

One of the main premises of the sport of Ultimate is Spirit.
This, in turn, fosters the inclusive nature of the sport.
This is a very important quality of Ultimate and should be
included in the vision statement of a large league, such as
OCUA. It may be true that smaller leagues may only be able
to focus on delivering the sport of Ultimate to either
competitive or novice players, but happily with the size of
OCUA both can be offered without taking away from one
another.

Vision Statement
The Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association exists to organize,
support and promote top quality, spirited Ultimate in the
National Capital Region, with opportunities for all people at
all skill levels. This will be done within its own framework
and, when constructive, the Association will aid in the
development of the sport and its players outside of this
framework.

UPI SHARE DONATION

In an effort to set the budget for this coming year, I would
like to know if any of the UPI shareholders are contemplating
donating their shares to OCUA. If you are a shareholder,
either as an individual or team share and you wish to donate
your share/s to OCUA can you please let me know and I will
send you the necessary paperwork. Please drop me an e-mail
at gm@ocua.ca

SUPPORT THE CANADIAN MASTERS ULTIMATE TEAM!

As you may know, this summer, the World Ultimate and Guts
Championship will be held this summer in Turku, Finland.

The Masters Division will be represented by an Ottawa based
team. Over 80% of the team will be OCUA players who will
train in Ottawa and travel to tournaments across eastern
Canada and the northeastern US to get ready for Worlds in
August.

As you can imagine the cost of doing this is far beyond the
typical touring schedule of a competitive team. Aside from
the cost of traveling to Turku and competing there, there
is the cost of traveling to the prep tournaments and
assisting the out-of-region players on the team (Vancouver,
Calgary, Halifax.... this will be determined at training
camp - but there will be at least 5 out-of-regions players
selected as per CUPA's policy) that make up the national
base for the Masters team. At present the cost per player
to represent Canada this summer is approximately $3000.

We have already secured one sponsor who is very supportive
of the Masters' team. utan Tanning Centre, a sale rep for
Oakley sunglasses and clothing, utan has agreed to
donate 25% of net sales to the team! This includes
Oakleys, tanning and tanning products (excluding esthetics).
When the purchase is made, simply tell them that the sale
was referred to by the Masters Ultimate team. Each month
(till the end of July), they will transfer 25% of the net
sales through this plan to the team! Whether it is to ski,
a bit of tanning base for a winter get away or simply to
get ready for the summer, sunglasses and some "sun" are
always a good thing and you would be supporting the
Masters' team! utan's website will up and running
early next week: www.utan.ca

utan is located at the Sports Complex, University of
Ottawa, 2nd Floor. The comlex is located at the corner of
King Edward and Mann.

We are presently looking for more sponsorship support
from local and national business to help defer some of the
costs. Any help would be much appreciated and we are
putting together a plan to help return support back to
those companies.

Please help support OCUA athletes and Canadian Ultimate!

please contact us at: cdnmasters04@yahoo.ca

volunteer openings.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:
