YOUTH TEACHING SESSIONS

OCUA will be expanding on the program at UPI with new sites
across the City. There will be Western, Central, and
Eastern locations as well as the Southern one at UPI. In
the East we have rented a site on Dunning Rd and will use
it on Wednesdays. In the West we have Levesque Park on
Tuesdays, and for the City center we are going to be using
Lynda Lane Park on Mondays, and the traditional UPI
sessions on Thursday evenings. The Association is looking
for adult volunteers for each area to head up the sessions,
and for youth volunteers (16-19) to assist them with
coaching. The time volunteered by the youth coaches will go
toward community service requirements for graduation.

Bilingualism is a assets as is a knowledge of first aid.
Each site will require a chief organizer, so if you want to
wear the big hat let us know! The plan is to run 8 week
sessions beginning on May 17th and running until July
22nd, with two weeks allowance for rain outs! If you are
interested in volunteering please contact Nick at gm@ocua.ca

FACILITIES CELL UPDATE

Sportsfields Strategy:

On April 15th, at the Health Recreation and Social Services
Committee (HRSSC) meeting, the city Sportsfields Strategy
was presented by city staff for approval. The proposed
strategy can be viewed on the City of Ottawa website
(http://www.ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/hrssc/2004
/02-19/ACS2004-PEO-COM-0004.htm). OCUA sent a delegate to
speak at this meeting.

Based on the HRSSC meeting and the proposed strategy, the
key points relating to ultimate are as follows:

1. Obtaining ultimate fields has been identified as one of
the top short term priorities for the City.

2. The City has identified a short term need for 16
replacement ultimate fields and 25 new ones.

3. A long term proposed population ratio for allocation of
sports fields is defined. This will be the measuring stick
that they will use when deciding how to allocate fields.

4. The population ratio proposes 1 field per 120 ultimate
players, while the soccer projection was for 1 field per 90
players. Football and ‘ball diamond sports’ were the only
other two sports that received such a ‘commitment’.

5. City staff clarified that a ‘field’ as defined in the
Sportsfields Strategy is a generic field not a sports-
specific field. New fields are being designed to be
slightly larger than a soccer field with the intention that
it could fit two ultimate fields. When the city states that
ultimate will get 1 field per 120 players, they are
referring to one of these soccer fields. In other words,
they mean two ultimate fields. Note that this is not made
clear in the strategy document, but may be in the
background documentation at the city (it was clarified
verbally by senior city staff).

5. UPI fields owned by OCUA are included as part of the city
inventory in terms of field allocation. They clarified that
they would also include privately owned fields used by
other sporting organizations, and that they were in the
process of gathering this information.

The downside: The inclusion of UPI in the city inventory is
not good for us. Tax dollars help offset the cost of
maintenance for city owned fields, so this inclusion means
that we as players have to continue to pay more for our
fields than say soccer players do.

The upside: There are signs that OCUA’s years of lobbying
are starting to pay off. Ultimate is firmly entrenched as a
major sport in the eyes of the city. This strategy also
shows a specific commitment for 41 fields for ultimate in
the short term. The sports field strategy is a documented
commitment that city staff will consider ultimate when
doling out fields instead of automatically handing them out
to soccer.

What do we do now? The city made a short term commitment of
41 fields for ultimate. The problem is that they do not
have a field reserve from which they can hand us 41 fields.
That means that we still need to continue to lobby the city
and to identify and pursue alternative field opportunities.

What’s happening in the facilities cell? There are currently
several people working on behalf of the facilities cell who
are working on obtaining both city and non-city fields.
Many exciting opportunities are in the works. Some of these
opportunities will lead to new fields for ultimate in the
near term, while others will not come on-line for several
years.

OCUA has achieved a couple of short term successes:

- Four new fields in Cumberland for 2004; and

- A long term lease for fields at the Long Island Locks. The
field quality is currently being evaluated to see if one of
the fields will be usable for 2004.

What about the SOD farm?

The SOD farm rezoning process is pending city efforts to
fulfill their contractual commitment to provide OCUA with
16 replacement fields.

Interesting in getting on board? The facilities cell can use
more help. Contact the OCUA volunteer coordinator at
volunteer@ocua.ca.

ULTIMATE AT NORTEL

(This information was sent to me from an OCUA member who
works at Nortel)

A lunchtime intramural Ultimate 'league' is being setup for
Nortel employees (and possibly spouses) starting June 1.
Registration closes May 17. People can register as
individual players ($20) or as teams ($100). All games will
be at Nortel's soccer fields at the Carling campus. Nortel
employees can get details on the Nortel Ottawa Aralia
website (http://aralia.us.nortel.com/ott/)

Although this seems to be only open to Nortel employees, I
thought you might add it to UH, as an ultimate community
type of announcement, just in case any Nortel ultimate
players missed the announcement (which was buried in another
email).
