Or perhaps you are asking yourself, "Land, what land"? Read on and learn. Last year we formed a corporation called Ultimate Parks Inc. and sold 550 shares. The money was used as a down payment to purchase land to develop into suitable ultimate fields. It was an amazing effort and now we own 100 acres about 5 minutes away from the current sod farm. OCUA, the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Player's Association, leases the land from the shareholders of UP Inc. Now we are working on the challenging job of getting the new fields ready for play. July 20 to 23 During the week of Monday, July 20 and Thursday, July 23 a member of the league will be visiting each playing field to solicit members to purchase shares for the land development project. During that time we are looking for a commitment to purchase shares. We will record your name, phone number, and email address and how many shares you are interested in purchasing. The shares are $200 each and will be purchased back by OCUA at $225. In September, we will arrange a time for all members who committed to get together when they will bring their cheques and sign a shareholders agreement (that's right, you don't have to pay until September). For more information on the share buy back please ask an UP Inc. or OCUA board member or check out the land web site: http://www.cyberus.ca/~ocua/UP-Inc/ What are we using the money for? Now we know that many of you have contributed to the project and your support is very much certainly appreciated. However, not all of the shares were sold and that unrealised capital is important to the project. After a lot of study, we have decided to go with an improved grading plan for the land. Grading is something you only get the opportunity to do once. Better grading means improved drainage, more uniform topsoil coverage and ultimately, better turf. This plan will also allow us to have a temporary parking lot and the ability to rent out the international quality fields to soccer groups when we aren't using them. We need to sell 100 shares to pay for this important initiative. Other initiatives that the league is working towards for the land development include: - Pond and natural wet land (to provide water for irrigation and provide important environmental and pure enjoyment factors) - Irrigation system - River bank ecosystem development - Interpretative boardwalk - Foot bridge - Etc. What additional financing options are we pursuing? OCUA and UP Inc. are committed to developing the land in an environmentally sound manner. The project will also be part of a research project on sports grass and turf management conducted by Kemptville College and the land developer. We have been pursuing additional funding through several avenues. Significant interest in the project has resulted from our environmental initiatives. A firm called Green and Gold will aid us in obtaining funding if we qualify for the "Committed to Green" certification. Fortunately, we can qualify for this status with very little change on our part as we are already planning to do most of these things anyway (organic turf management, water conservation, waste management, recycling, composting). We would be the first North American facility to be certified. We are also pursuing other forms of sponsorship and doing some individual fund raising. Suppliers of the products we use to develop the fields are also being approached to be a part of the research project and the environmental initiatives. If you want more information on any of these initiatives please see the Land web site for more details. We are updating the site as you read this. Can you contribute to these efforts? Please help us out by contributing your time, energy, and expertise. How can you help? There are lots of ways you can contribute to our efforts: Buy some shares Volunteer to help obtain additional funding Buy some shares Volunteer to help us communicate what we are doing to our membership Buy some shares Volunteer to help us communicate to the world at large Buy some shares Volunteer some of your skills and talents (sell shares, help out at the land, donate us something we need you have access to, volunteer to help co-ordinate volunteers etc.) If you want to volunteer please call: Doug Tahirali e: 231-4662 ************************************************************ NO BORDERS PLAYERS NEEDED: Any players interested in playing in this weeks up coming 'No Borders' ultimate tournament please call Jack Webb at 231-6530. There is a spot for a local pick-up team "Suspicious Pickups" (and many spots on this team for individuals) in the 'B' pool. I am hoping to fill the roster with those interested in seeing what tournament play is all about. The 'B' pool at No Borders tends to be fun yet challenging. Hopefully we can make this happen as it is an experiment to involve more players into that world of tournament play.
