If I did this in the future all proceeds would go to OCUA. Currently UH costs nothing and raises nothing. I would like your opinion on this. Now I hate spam but in the interest of helping OCUA raise money I personally wouldn't mind the occasional ad. As the editor I would make sure ads are occasional and in text form only. Now if you have a strong dislike to this please let me know by sending an e-mail to "mharley@sympatico.ca" with the subject "No to Ads in Ultimate Happenings". I am going to assume that silence means you support this idea. Thanks Mike ************************************************************ MANDATORY CAPTAINS MEETING FOR 1999 SEASON: Date: April 14 Location: Woodroffe High School Time: 7 - 9 pm. Yes, it's the same day as registration for summer Ultimate but it only runs until around noon so you can do both. :) Ever been to a game or tournament and seen someone get injured but no one had ice or bandages? Ever have that injured person be you? If I were the injured player I would want to know that at least one person had some first aid training and supplies - thus, the course. The cost is $15/person and we are negotiating a good price for the first aid kits. For details please contact Kathy Connelly at kathandallan@sprint.ca or by phone at 230-6150 (h) or 952-1441 (w) ************************************************************ TAPING CLINIC: Sunday, May 2nd we will be running our first taping clinic. What we want to cover in this course is some of the basics for taping wrists and ankles. It will run from 8:30 am - 12:00 noon. The cost will be around $15. I'll know more once the supplies are bought. For details please contact Kathy Connelly at kathandallan@sprint.ca or by phone at 230-6150 (h) or 952-1441 (w) ************************************************************ LOOKING FOR A TEAM THAT LIKES TO PLAY AT THE SOD FARM: I live 35-40 min. southeast of the sod farm. I am hoping not to have to drive all the way inside Ottawa to play. Are there any teams that like to have their games scheduled at the Sod Farm and need players? Thanks Colin e: colin_hanes@hotmail.com ************************************************************ WOMEN'S HAT TOURNAMENT FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH: Here is an opportunity to play WITH some of the women you have been playing against all this time (no men in drag please) while also contributing to a worthy cause. Our hope is to combine various skill levels (from people who have never played before to competitive level players) and put together some fun but competitive teams. Saturday, July 24th, we will be holding our first ever Women's Hat Tournament, with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research, at the Sod Farm in Manotick. We hope to make this an annual tournament. We will be limiting teams to 10 players each and will be trying our best to keep them balanced with an equal skill level, dividing up the competitive players amongst the teams. We ask that you make your interest known by July 14th to give us enough time to organize the event properly. Please contact: Kathy Connelly h: 230-6150 e: kathandallan@sprint.ca or Diana Nunes h: 841-6859 e: nunes@newforce.ca -------------- We will be requiring the following from you... Name: ______________ ____________________ Phone number: ____ - ________ E-mail address: _______________________________ Skill Level ( 1-7) _________ (7 - Know the rules, run with blazing speed, cut hard every time, D everything, throw accurately and lay out... consistently. 1 - None of the above) Number of years you've been playing: _______ Ability to slag: _________________________ _______ I am very knowledgeable about the rules and volunteer to captain a team. Do you currently play in the Women's League? _______ If not, would you be willing to sub? ______________ Payment in the amount of $10.00 ************************************************************ DISCS FOR SALE: The Fabulous Flying Flamingoes have discs for sale: black, white, yellow, blue sparkle, White sparkle, gold sparkle $10 UV and glow in the dark for $12. Contact Gavin Thompson p: 730-7435 e: ffflamingoes@hotmail.com w: www.visitweb.com/fff ************************************************************ KUDOS: I heard this from my Mom who was watching the Brier. The sports announcers on CBC were talking about the Ontario team and what some of them did during the summer months when they weren't curling. "Says here that two of the players from Ontario play Ultimate Frisbee in Ottawa." Kudos to Chris Fulton and Howard Rajala. Hearing the words "Ultimate Frisbee" on national television is pretty cool. And so is playing in the men's national curling championships. Manon des Groseilliers ************************************************************ DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO SCAFFOLDING?: Would you like to see your company's name on TV? We need scaffolding so that when Rogers comes to tape the Men's and Women's finals at this summer's Nationals, they have somewhere to put their cameras. We'll need to get thirty feet up at centers, and ten to fifteen feet up at the back of each end zone. If you can help, or know someone who can, please contact Andre Larade. e: dz864@ncf.ca e: lara0018@algonquinc.on.ca p: 769-7083 ************************************************************ ULTIMATE TOURNEY - SOLSTICE 99: There's a new ultimate tourney on the tour this year. It's called Solstice 99 and here are the details: Date: June 19, 20 (until this year there has been no tournament scheduled in the Ontario, Quebec so hopefully your schedule is clear) Place: Centennial Park and Stadium , Etobicoke [Toronto] Ontario (this was one of the forerunning sites for Worlds in Toronto 94'). It's a Charity Event: Sierra Legal Defense Fund is the charity of choice. They are a nonprofit organization that provides legal services free of charge in an effort to enact environmental protection, preservation and improvement. Divisions: Open 16-24 teams (top 8-12 by invitation), 8-12 Women, 8 Junior Team Fees: Team fees are going to be $350 (this and all other prices in Canadian funds). $50 of this will go directly to the Sierra Legal Defense Fund so if you are able to rationalize it like this, its more like a $300 tournament. What your Team gets for $350: 1) Go Carting: Over 10 rounds of go carting at the track which is within 400m of the fields. 2) Dinner. What will be served has yet to be finalized. It will be in hearty portions, have variety and be tasty. What it won't be is burgers and fries. 3) Cups tourney: Every team member will have the opportunity to participate in the what is hoped to be the largest game of cups to take place on planet Earth. For those of you who are not familiar with cups, it is played with one disc, two teams of two people, four long slender wooden garden stakes, and usually a beer in hand. The rest is details, dexterity and laughs. 4) The Party: The venue is within five minutes walk of the fields and the night is going to be something you won't be able to remember (or forget I suppose if your still have a memory by the end of it). The plan is to mix one great band, lots of cheap beer and booze and about 400 funky ultimate folk in one large enclosed space which will be divided into theme rooms (i.e. barber chairs, beer funnels, fooz ball and other fun stuff) and dancing space. The rest is up to you. I should point out that beer revenues will go to Sierra Legal Defense Fund. 5) A chance at 15+ minutes of fame: The way things are shaping up there is going to be a film crew documenting the whole weekend which will be scaled down for a one hour prime time piece on the Outdoor Life Network. Other important info: Accommodation: There is a Ramada Inn [tel: (416) 621-2121] 800 m from the fields. 1-2 person rooms for $99 + taxes and 3-4 person rooms for $109 + 12% taxes. The Valhalla Inn [tel: (416) 239-2391] (a 5-10 minute drive) has 3-4 person rooms for $89 + 12% taxes. Both these hotels have blocks of rooms secured for tournament participants; Ramada until June 1, Valhalla until May 19. Book before these dates if possible. Making Bids for a Spot in the Tourney: This is an invitational tournament for the open division, so in some respects entrance will be limited. However because the schedule will be drawn up so that teams of equal experience play one another while ensuring every team has a chance to win, I encourage all teams to enter a bid. The goal is to have the highest caliber of play possible, but the final division sizes will be decided by interest, so your chances of getting a spot may be better than you think. Registered Disc Golf Course on Site: One of Canada's 17 registered disc golf courses is located in Centennial Park and rounds are free. Who's invited: If your team is on the following list it may be the first you have heard about it. I apologize for this but I would very much appreciate if you could RSVP about your interest ASAP. Rebellion Yes Mephisto Big Ass Truck Wax As you can see the list of invited teams is incomplete. The delay is mainly due to my lack of contacts so I beseech those of you with contacts to elite teams not on this list (especially those in the states i.e. DOG, Snapple, Rochester, New York, Cornell) to either forward addresses to me or this message to them. Much thanks. Due to the charitable nature of this event I'd like to make it very clear that any donations in addition to the team fee extraction and drinking revenues would be gladly received in return for a tax credit. Any corporate donations would be a dream come true. That about wraps things up for this installment of "Info About Solstice 99". If you have any questions or you would like to enter a bid please contact me at solstice_1999@hotmail.com . On behalf of the Sierra Legal Defense Fund and myself I'd like to thank you for your time and express our hope of seeing you on June 19/20.
