The long-term benefits of ultimate have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your toss. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your toss until someone's caught a disc you've thrown. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked on the field. You are not as fat as you imagine. Don't worry about the point. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to take the disc and run it over the line yourself. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blind side you like a disc to the forehead late on a Tuesday evening. Make one play every game that scares you. Dig. Don't be reckless with other people's throws. Don't put up with lip from the opposing team. Run your ass off. Flip the bird if you really must (just be imaginary about it). Don't waste your time on running for catches you'll never make. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The game is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself. Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old discs. Throw away your old, smelly cleats. Stretch. Don't feel guilty if you don't know what the hell you're doing on the field. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 how to play the game. Some of the most interesting 40 year-olds I know still don't. Get plenty of practice. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll play, maybe you'll be benched. Maybe you'll touch the disc, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll score a point at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken in the end zone at 45. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your catches are half chance. So are everybody else's. Enjoy your body. Throw it mercilessly at every opponent you get close to. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. You may end up taking someone home one night from the sod farm. Run, even if you have nowhere to go but for another drink on the sideline. Read the rules, even if you don't follow them. Do not listen to the captain. She'll only make you feel ugly. Get to know your teammates. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to the waterboy. He's likely to 'Bobby Boucher' you at anytime and you know you don't want that to happen. Understand that pains come and go, but a precious few are gonna stick around forever. Work hard to bridge the gaps between you and your teammates, because the older you get, the less they're going to throw you the disc. Play at the Sod farm once, but leave before it makes you hard. Play at Vanier City Hall once, but leave before it makes you soft. Drink. Accept certain inalienable truths: You can either throw or you can't. Teammates will philander. You, too, will get better. And when you do, you'll fantasize that you made the play of the game one night, you're the star of the team, you don't suck as badly as you think, and your team wants to name the team after you. Respect dog dung on the field. Don't expect anyone else to pick it up for you. Maybe you step in it. Maybe you don't. But you never know when you're gonna have to find a stick to scrape some off. Don't mess too much with throw or by the time you're 40 it'll really suck. Be careful where you throw the disc, but be patient with those who try to catch it. Saving old discs is a form of nostalgia. Digging in is a way of fishing them from the disposal, wiping them off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling them for more than they're worth. But trust me on throwing discs. -Dan Moorcroft ************************************************************ TEAM REGISTRATION - MAY 1: Date: Saturday, May 1st (11 am - 4 pm) Location: James Street Feed Company, 390 Bank Street Each Team Must Bring: - $750 team fee + $25 roster deposit - $5 cone deposit (if a team wants cones) We Will Have: - Initial schedules for each division - Team Roster Forms - Copies of TOUR for your team - Cones - Discs and Bumper Stickers for sale Notes: - Cheque only, no cash - Make the cheque out to the "Ottawa-Carleton Ultimate Association - If roster is submitted by May 22 the roster deposit will be refunded - We will charge $25 for any returned cheques - Teams which do not pay by May 1st will risk losing their spot and will be charged a $50 late fee. - We will buy unused cones for $5 (for a set of 8) - Please keep your team name consistent throughout registration ************************************************************ THE OTTAWA MYSTERY DOUBLES DISC GOLF TOURNEY - MAY 8th 1999: The snow is gone and the grass is growing, the baskets are finally in and the mighty Ottawa river has already claimed its first few unwary overturned drives. Its time to kick off the Disc Golf season in Ottawa with the first annual Doubles Disc Golf Tourney. Mystery Doubles will take place on Saturday, May 8th. It will be a fun tourney where new players will be paired up with more experienced players. The pairs will then engage in friendly competition to determine the overall champions. Aside from prizes for the top teams a prize will be given to the player who brings the largest number of new players to the competition. FORMAT: The driving force for this tourney is to introduce this great sport to as many new players as possible. At registration new players will be paired up with experienced players by drawing lots. Ideally this should level the playing field for all pairs. The game will be played based on alternate shots, new, experienced, new, experienced and so on. The lowest overall score determines the winning team. Everyone plays the first 18 holes. The top 18 pairs will then move on to the play-off round, another 18 holes. TIME and PLACE: Day: Saturday May 8th, 1999. Registration/Team Selection: 9:00 A.M. Tee-off: 10:00 A.M. Place: The Jacques Cartier DG course, meet at the Maison de Velo. (NE corner of the soccer field) For directions to the course see: http://www.ocua.ca/fields.html FEES: The entry fee for the Mystery Doubles Tourney is: $10. The proceeds will go to the Ottawa Disc Golf Club. It is hoped that we can purchase more baskets and eventually make the 9 into an 18. REGISTRATION: To register please send an e-mail to Barney Barnowski, providing your name, contact info and a completed survey. The survey will help me determine if you are a "new" player. Send info to: Barney Barnowski at "barnowski@nortelnetworks.com". SURVEY: This is to determine your playing level. The sport is new in Ottawa, so this will take some guess work. 1.) Have you played Disc Golf before? If so, how many years? 2.) Do you play disc golf with regular golf discs or ultimate discs? 3.) Do you play Ultimate? If yes, for how long? 4.) Did you participate in last years tournament (First Ottawa Open)? If yes, how did you place? 5.) On a scale of 1 to 10. How would you rate your Disc golf ability, where: 1 = What's Disc Golf?, 10 = You are an active member in the PDGA. 6.) What is the furthest you have thrown a disc? (more for ultimate players): - 1/4 field - 1/2 field - Out the back of the other endzone. ************************************************************ "POLE-HOLE-KA" DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT: I would like to invite couples to sign up for the limited- entry event, the "Pole-Hole-Ka" a mixed-doubles alternate shot format 36-hole disc golf tournament. We will play four nines: Rounds 1 & 3 men tee off on odd numbered holes women tee off on even numbered holes Rounds 2 & 4 men tee off on even numbered holes women tee off on odd numbered holes Given that it's alternate shot, this works out to HALF the throwing of playing 36, but ALL the walking...
