For the past six weeks, OCUA has run its 8 2021-2022 Winter Adult Leagues. All 2021-2022 Winter Leagues require full vaccination for participation and additional health and safety protocols are in place to reduce risk. Unfortunately, the risks of COVID-19 cannot be completely eliminated and there were two instances regarding COVID-19 that have occurred in the past seven days.
The first instance involved a fully vaccinated player in the Friday Late Night League reporting a breakthrough positive COVID test Wednesday after symptom onset Sunday. The second instance involved a fully vaccinated player in the second timeslot of the Monday Parity League reporting a breakthrough positive COVID test Thursday. In both cases, the close contacts have been notified directly by OCUA. Those impacted have been encouraged to conduct regular self-assessments and adhere to the Ottawa Public Health guidelines provided to them. OCUA has cancelled the December 17 Friday Late Night League games and all individuals identified as close contacts in both cases have been directed to not attend any OCUA leagues or programs until after December 24. OCUA adult leagues are on a break for the holiday season, and are set to resume the first week of January.
OCUA is working hard to try to keep leagues and programs as safe as possible. The organization appreciates that individuals contacted us immediately when there were issues around COVID-19 exposure to help keep the community safe. While OCUA has communicated directly with those impacted, we felt it was also important for the community to be aware of the issues and serve as an important reminder that the pandemic is not over. The risks of COVID-19 unfortunately are not something we can completely eliminate so it is important for participants and teams to follow COVID-19 protocols and guidelines to reduce the risks for everyone participating in the sport.
