Hi OCUA,
Situation:
In my game last night my team was up by 1 point at approx. 8pm – the sunset cap was 8:05pm. Before the next point was played, a 5 minute time cap warning was issued to both teams. During the next point, a player on my team called a timeout. I personally disagreed with the timeout call since we were up by 1 point and it was less than 5 minutes to cap. I considered this a lack of spirit, since it could have been (and probably was) perceived that my team was trying to kill the clock and not giving our opponents a chance to tie the game before the time cap.
This could have been the reason for my teammates call; however, we were playing iron-woman and playing a team who was much younger and way more athletic than we were. Our women were completely gassed and could barely run due to fatigue and cramping. I do feel my teammate called the timeout to ensure our women had enough energy to win the point we were currently playing and as a result win the game; not to kill the clock.
Question:
Is there anywhere in the rules or the OCUA specific rules that prohibits a team from calling a timeout with 5 or 10 minutes remaining in a time capped game?
Result:
My team ended up scoring that point and going up by 2. We even had time to play 1 more point before the cap where our opponents scored. We ended up winning by 1 point and it didn’t appear the other team was frustrated we had called a timeout. Though I expect they probably were a little ticked.
Suggestion:
In the spirit of the game, I would be a little ticked off if my team was down 1 point with less than 5 minutes to go until time cap and the other team called a timeout. If there’s no rule for this currently, I do think OCUA should consider adding this rule for next season – no timeouts can be called within 5 minutes of the official time cap.
Anyway, could you please advise if there is currently a rule in place for this situation. No one at our game knew for sure.
