The Great Parity Simulation Experiment: Week 10 (Quarterfinals)

After Monday’s thrilling nailbiters we were treated to an uninspiring slate of games on Thursday. Fortunately, the big margins of victory in each of these quarterfinals sets us up for an exciting set of semifinal matchups next week as the heavy hitters go head-to-head. Game summaries

5th Place Quarterfinal: Love Aggietually (MAnge) (17) vs. Ratioxoxo (Kindha) (19)

Parity fans could be excused for skipping this game, which was not only an unimportant consolation match but also a total snooze fest. Cautious, possession-style offense was on full display here as Teams Marie-Ange and Kindha combined for an incredible 385 completions yet only 36 goals. Kindha pulled out the win in this humdrum affair with a noteworthy performance from Jim Robinson (5G, 2A).

Quarterfinal #1: JT Got Us Fallin' in Love (Morgan) (24) vs. All the Single Bladies (Al) (20)

After playing to a close half, Team Morgan exploded out of the intermission with three quick  goals and never looked back. Dan Thomson (4G, 5A) and Jay Thor Turner (5G, 3A) offered glimpses of their younger selves as the masters duo dominated the opposing defence. Justine Dagenais (3G, 4A) played well in the loss but a lacklustre performance from superstar Mike Lee (5 TA) held the team back.

Quarterfinal #2: Date Night: Neena Yo Biswas (Sully) (19) vs. Be My Frisbae (Laura) (28)

It was supposed to be the night’s premier matchup but the #1 seed never found their feet as Team Laura cruised to a semifinal berth. Charlotte Mussels (6G, 4A) took every opportunity to carve up a disorganized Team Sully defense that managed only 8 blocks on the night. Dante Lafontaine (3G, 5A) operated the backfield for Laura and did so without any turnovers. The home crowd gave Shubho Bo Biswas (3G, 4A) a standing ovation for his strong performance in the loss. In a teary speech he thanked the fans for their support of a playoff run that ended much sooner than Date Night devotees were hoping (and many analysts were expecting).

Quarterfinal #3: The First Cut is the Deepest (Julia) (16) vs. How to Lose a Disc in 10 Stalls (Brian) (25)

The mostly-lefty Team Julia left it all on the field in a stunning come-from-behind win in the pre-quarterfinals. Unfortunately, that meant there wasn’t much left in the tank for this much more important elimination game. Indeed, after playing a competitive first half Team Julia completely ran out of gas in the second. Team Brian’s roster of monstrous athletes ran roughshod in the second half, going on a 13-5 run to close it out and earn their spot in the semis. Chris Castonguay (2G, 6A) quarterbacked the offense while Rachel Young (3G, 5A) worked the midfield and Marcus Bordage (5G, 1A) finished plays. Patrick Kenzie (1G, 2A) had 36 completions for Julia but his 7 throwaways were too much to bear.

Quarterfinal #4: Reason to love Ottawa #40 (Nat) (23) vs. When Cranky met Cara (Mehmet) (19)

Team Nat came out flying with four early breaks and never looked back in a convincing quarterfinal win. Defense was the difference maker as the team managed 14 D blocks and went 10 for 23 on break opportunities. Hugh Podmore (1G, 5A) played well in the win while bringing his league-leading drop tally to 14. GM Mehmet will be pleased with a stand-out performance from Katelyn Fontaine (5G, 1A) but has to be disappointed with the result. Due to the unusual 10-team playoff format, Team Mehmet does not even have a shot at fivals and will instead play out the season in the 7th place bracket.
