Parity - Week 17 Highlights

The seasons turn, and as the warmth of spring approaches, all I can think of is the few short weeks of Parity that we have left. Week 17 is in the books, and starting next week, playoffs!

But who cares about playoffs now? We have the successes and mostly failures of last night to discuss. But first, a few small things. A tablet crashed in the middle of a game, and we lost the stats. Ian and Stan, your failures this week are lost forever* to the ether.

Fun fact: this week’s schedule was picked (mostly) by GMs.

Fun fact: Kindha’s team soundly defeated Al’s team, in the battle of the married couple. I’ve heard rumor there was a bet on the game, and it is now Al who makes the sandwiches in this household.

Fun fact: Rob requested a matchup against Jessie’s team so he could, and I quote, “destroy” her team again. Rob lost.

Fun fact: There are no other interesting story lines to be told about the other matchups.

Peyton Manning: Stan has decided to emulate 2016 Peyton Manning. He plays some very questionable (some may even say mediocre) Frisbee, but surrounds himself with good talent and free agency pickups. Then he hurts himself and rides the pine to allow that talent to get more play time.

Babe Ruth: Alex Bush got the disk, pointed wildly to space, and threw to an open cutter. Unlike the great Bambino, the “alright, I guess” Bushino came up short. The throw hit turf.

Eyes Closed: In one memorable point, there were 9 throwaways. The collective sighing of the sidelines was just soooooo sad, you guys. Mostly it was blind throws to open space without a cutter near the disk. At one point Andrea Proulx yelled “but there’s open space, they need to learn to be there!”

For all you aspiring frisbeeticians out there, you look first, throw second. It’s just like crossing the road, and we all know how to do that, right?

Geofford quipped, “I’m driving home before any of these yahoos get on the road and blindly turn into me.” I hope he made it home safely.

Steve Bisang: Steve Bisang bisanged the disk 4 times this week, but this week’s Steve Bisang is actual Ian Ewing! Almost all of the statistics from the first game are lost forever, but Ian has openly admitted to dropping the disk in the endzone four times in one game. That is peak Bisang. It is next-level Bisang. I would argue it exceeds and surpasses Bisang. Henceforth, when one bisangs too hard, it will be known as an Ianwing.

Stay on Target: Mehmet had no throwaways, despite leading the league in throwaways prior to this week. As a result, he’s now only third worst (behind Al and Jessie!). Notably, Greg Probe had over 20 touches and also zero throwaways.

Get on Target: Sina, Vickers and… Kindha?! paced the league in throwaways with 5.

Quadruple Triple: Jon Pindur had 3G, 3A, 3D and 4 throwaways for the ignominious quadruple triple. Adam MacDonald was 1 throwaway away from the same achievement.

Goooooooooooaaaaaaal: Andre Scott, you had 5 goals, a D, and a pretty great game coming down with things in traffic. Great game!

Back in the Game: Ewelina had a big showing with 3G, 1A, 3AA and 1D, her best performance since returning from injury.

Parity’s Special Little Guy: We need to talk about a guy who has been playing parity for the last two years, who has grown and improved as a player in ways that I personally find remarkable. Jonathan Champagne started last season as a very raw player with obvious athleticism and potential. He is now a very capable, reliable player. This week on 16 touches he had 3G, 3A, 2AA, 1D, and was 100% throwing and catching. His performance was one of the 10 best for the week.

Parity’s Special Older Little Guy: Marc Vachon is a player the GMs have actively fought over all year, and this week shows you why. 4G, 1A, 4AA and 1D, also 100% throwing and catching, also one of the 10 best for the week.

I’m the Best Puller Ever: I hit the ceiling again. That is all.

I was throwing to Bisang.

A throwaway is a throwaway; Bisang Bisanging is a throw-drop, I presume.

Kindha and I tied for total turnovers generated with 6 each (5+1 for her, 4+2 for me).

Good times.

The best thing about Bisang is that he provides a perfect scapegoat for my failures. I mean, the guy's name has been verbed for this very purpose.

just to be able to have the language to describe what we've done with Bisang's name.

Because being covered is over rated

Of my having another zero throwaway game I think the only thing to do is pull a Stan and coach the team I've assembled to victory from the sideline using marbles....

The top 10 throwaway list has been my bugaboo all season.  I applaud the efforts of Sina, Jessie, and Al and implore you to try harder.  Meanwhile Bush, Fred, Amos, Ian and Nick need not give up, with great effort you too can move up the top 10 list and take my spot.

I need more creative stats to make myself look good, what's this O+ I'm seeing in the chart, let's talk about that some more (assume it's start on O and score).  Is O% the number of times the player starts on offence, or the % that they score when they do?

Depends on where you see it. If you start a point on O and your line scores, you get a O+. If you start a point on O and get scored on, you get an O-. If you start a point on D and your line scores, you get a D+. If you start a point on D and get scored on, you get a D-. O%/D% are mislabelled columns in the master spread sheet the plebes don't get to see.

However....

Don't forget a stellar performance from Alec Clark with 5G, 2AA and 100% throwing and catching. And I'm not just propping him up because he's teammate.

Why isn't anyone talking about Owen Lumley's drop? He had the disc in his hands and then politely dropped it. It was a nice way to give the losing team a chance... right?

Stephen "Talented Mr. Ripley" Close admitted to me yesterday that he's literally leeching Owen's life force. Owen's drop may be due to Stephen's meteoric rise in beardedness.

I think the real explanation involves much less sorcery.  Steve just got too much of his beard oil on the disk and I couldn't hold on.  Or was it Kirsten with her peanut oil?  Something oily for sure.

It's very oily.

Given that Stephen didn't touch the disc until... oh... the second half... and that is precisely the timing of the TSN turning point for Owen... I'd agree with your assessment of beard oil.

This was the thing I forgot.

I think Rob Tyson sabotaged the tablet to conceal his two drops in the first game.  Perfect catching maintained.

With the number of drops and throwaways and the amount of otherwise terrible play from the first game, there must be at least a dozen potential sabateurs. Myself included. I have no alibi - I blacked out after my second endzone drop and didn't come to until I was at Dominion City Brewery with my team. (Thanks, Ben!)

I can't believe no one has referenced David O'Connor's RIDICULOUS grab in the end zone during the first game !!!  The disc was D'd (deeeed?  d'ed?) and basically finished.  But then at the last minute, the DOC layed out and somehow managed to come up with the disc.  It was a spectacular grab ... to the point where I believe sorcery may have been at play.  It would have been nice to have James there for the instant replay video.  T'was a thing of beauty.

I almost felt bad that I caught it. Ben had laid out for the D and everything.

I felt bad that you didn't wave the disc in Ben's face and then quickly spiked it!  SoTG aside, this league is all about that.  But then again, you're "new" to the game.  ***Ben I was just kidding***

We cant forget Geofford rewarding my terrible poach off him by catching the open bail then throwing to me.

I'd like to see more of these next time.  How come me and Laura were the only ones ??  I'm just trying to be cool and fit in to the club...

As parity winds down, Owen just had to prove to everyone that he is human, and drop the disc twice.

Also, bisanging is contagious, so due to the stepp rise in bisangs that evening, Owen "I don't make no mistakes" Lumley couldn't even keep the bisangyness at bay.

No matter how hard I tried I could not get Johnny to drop a disc.  I threw him at least 3 challenging throws and he came up with all of them.
