Parity Starts Tonight

Hi,

Two-time reigning point leader here. Just reminding all of you that Parity starts tonight! That means I begin my defense of scoring title again. I see some chumps* (Mike Lee, Amos, Ariel) think that they can overtake yours truly as scoring leader, however they are wrong! With my patented Sky High (TM) jumping technique and my patent-pending Throw-It-Only-To-The-Endzone (R) method of getting assists, I know that once again I, Alex Bush, will be King of Scoring. And if these patented techniques don't work, I know that I can throw these stats newbs** $5 here and there and that'll buff my stats.

Bring it on, challengers.

Alex Bush

SCORING MACHINE

* May not actually be chumps, but could possibly be chimps?

** Stats newbs is an endearing term

Narrative: Bushy award will be given to someone closer to their scoring prime.

By-Line: can Bush outrun father time?

I feel like Mike Lee, Amos Lee, and yours truly are being singled out (called out) for some reason?  Hmmm, what could that reason be?

It's because you are the only challengers to my glory. No other reason.

You're not planning on building a wall of some sort, to keep us from "challenging" your glory, are you?

I just threw up in my mouth reading that Alex. This is the reason I never read the forum. Did you quote all your parity stats when you tried to make Phoenix this year? I'm confused why that didn't seem to work out :-P

Bush literally picked the worst day to post this. He did his best to goad some of us into a chirpfest of epic proportions but failed only in that so many of us were busy yesterday. Otherwise, I commend him for his troll-tastic rhetoric.

And he followed up his post with a career high 29359 drops last night. Notched a couple points for himself somewhere in between so by my calculations he's on track for 704616 drops and somewhere in the vicinity of 50-60 points this season.

Catching with your face, while stylistic, remains a difficult skill to master.

Is there a stat for good fundamentals? I've got a lock on that category this season.

And we actively discourage good fundamentals.

Good fundamentals are just defined differently on Mondays.

1. Bait and poach D
2. Bread and butter hammers, blades, and scoobers
3. Give and go ALL THE THINGS.
4. Chirping high salary earners (and Ariel)

... I really wish we had stats on these things now that I think about it...

"LIKE"

Whaaaaat?

Somehow my D and a goal were not recorded though. I am happy though my salary will remain average!

Time to volunteer to stat keep and show everyone how it's done.

Is this necessarily a stat keeping issue?

I didn't play parity last year but in the previous year it was fairly common for D's to be lost in the machine.

As an experiment it might be worth getting someone to record all of a night's D's on paper and then comparing that to the numbers generated by the app.

FWIW I'm also short a D from Monday...

The stats parsing is accurate, and we now have two different data frameworks that reflect the same numbers (Kevin can confirm this).

The issue is (and always has been) that people observing it either miss-click, do not record the D, or simply do not award the D because they do not think it warrants the stat. The sidelines are not always the best place to see plays, they are loud and busy so it's hard to talk to the field of play to confirm events, and sometimes when the game is moving fast things get missed.

This sort of thing is in short the human element. I suspect the D you are missing is the one from your second (actual) game on an out of bounds throw. No one was going to be able to keep in play and you forcefully spiked it with no one really in the vicinity of the play. It was likely deemed immaterial to the outcome of the play, and you didn't get the D. Not how I'd have recorded it, but... in hockey there's a clear hometown bias in how certain stats (like hits) are recorded, and some arenas show a distinct bias above or below the league's average for recording those stats. There's a human element at play.

There were guidelines last year on how to track events and what sorts of events to reward. The league should consider re-publishing them for stats volunteers.

Fair enough.

That pass was going out of bounds?  It definitely seemed catchable to me.  I didn't have eyes on the intended target though, were they not running parallel to me in the endzone?  That's sad.  Those steps could have be repurposed for the ensuing O-set. </derail>

So what you're saying is we could give salary based on number of steps taken as well. That way your effort to get to the disc wasn't in vain.

I want this to be the case only so that everybody is literally running on the spot to bolster their stats in the future. The soccer players will absolutely know at that point that we've lost our minds (and not just through the ridiculous amount of yelling we do).

Salary for steps taken while tired.

Otherwise we're rewarding Ash, Wildgen etc for being in shape and cutting constantly.  Which is not in the spirit of the league.

There is definitely some subjectiveness to recording D's. One way to fix it is to volunteer to be a stats keeper :p

Unfortunately my schedule would rarely allow me to volunteer, but I will make an effort this season.

My D was not really subjective, it was a clear interception, which I could see would be easy to miss.

... should you lament a missed statistic in week 2 and hope that instead of alienating your peers, it corrects the behaviour? With 23 weeks left, maybe a little good will should be cultivated?

More seriously, it's really easy to miss-press or simply get lost in a really frantic point and have events go "missing" simply because the game is chaotic and stat keeping isn't that easy. You will very likely benefit from this at some point, and I think Parity only comes with a 95% Accurate Guarantee™.

Watching last night's matchup between Hindsight and SOS, it appears that Sina was trying to make a statement, regarding the lack of mention of his name in Bush's original post above.  Dude dropped 6 dimes, and not just goal line dimes, pretty much mid-field or end-zone to end-zone dimes.  Statement made Sina, statement made.

On a related note - after week 2, the following people are ahead of Bush for the scoring title:

Owen (5 Gs, 11 As)

Ashlin (14 Gs, 1 A)

Keates (5 Gs, 10 As)

Amos (7 Gs, 7 As)

Sina (6 Gs, 8 As)

Kells (1 G, 13 As)

Hadrian (9 Gs, 4 As)

Stan (6 Gs, 7 As)

Ariel (6 Gs, 7 As)

* Mike Lee (8.57 Gs, 4.14 As)

Rob Ives (8 Gs, 3 As)

Justine (5 Gs, 6 As)

Fred (3 Gs, 8 As)

Higgins (1 G, 10 As)

Better up your game Bush! :)

* Missed the first two games.  Stats projected based on 2016 AUDL performance

Although Bush does look on pace to dominate the "timeout when you don't have any" title.

I have to say Bush is definitely winning the "quality post" award so far. His antagonizing (and obviously inaccurate) posts have been of the utmost entertainment in the discussions they've spawned. Chirping to beget more chirping... this is the true parity spirit.

3 years running.

Now that my name is mentioned, I shall drop down to top 20ish.  Top 10 ranking can be hard work that actually requires applying yourself.  I believe in the philosophy of minimum work and getting the win.  The goal is to bring a hammock to parity and somehow still get the win.

Thanks Ariel

I'm excited for the level of chirps. And I know I deserve it.

Just like I deserve scoring title.

Last year after two games, I had a total of 6 points (1G, 5A). There were 34 people ahead of me. Yet, I managed to knuckle down and pull out scoring title*.

So, in the words of a great philosopher: https://youtu.be/nfWlot6h_JM?t=43

*Jessie Robinson helped a lot. Just to compare, prior to our meeting she had 2G, 8A (10 points, 3.33 per game) and after she had 12G, 66A (76 points, 5.07 points per game). I had 3G, 7A (10 points, 3.33 per game) and 58 G, 63A (121 points, 7.56 per game).

I think this dream team needs to be reunited!

Note to self: Don't let this happen unless it's on my team.
