Game summaries
7th Place Semifinal: When Cranky met Cara (Mehmet) (21) vs. Love Aggietually (MAnge) (19)
Team Marie-Ange lost one close game after another during the regular season and that penchant for mediocrity has continued in the playoffs. Team Mehmet led by 7 early in the second half until a late push on the back of Corinne Dunwoody made things interesting, but it was still too little, too late for Marie-Ange. Heather Wallace (5G, 4A), one of only three women on Mehmet’s roster, relished the extra playtime while delivering an outstanding performance. Adam MacDonald scored 5 goals in the loss.
5th Place Semifinal #1: All the Single Bladies (Al) (23) vs. Date Night: Neena Yo Biswas (Sully) (22)
In a game that analysts are calling the near-comeback of the century,Team Sully clawed back from a 19-11 deficit with just 22 minutes to play to tie the game at 22-22… before ultimately losing to Al. Rachel Hurdle (4G, 3A) and Alexandre Tremblay-Larochelle (3G, 3A) led the late charge for Sully but it was a reckless huck from handler Kelsey Charie to a streaking Ethan Brady that sealed the deal for Al. GM Al scored 6 goals himself while throwing 0 assists in the win, confusing many long-time Parity observers. Evidently an old dog can learn new tricks when a fivals appearance is on the line.
5th Place Semifinal #2: The First Cut is the Deepest (Julia) (17) vs. Ratioxoxo (Kindha) (14)
Team Julia adopted a conservative, possession-style offense for this game, completing 231 passes and ultimately pulling out the win over Team Kindha in a low-scoring affair. When Matt Hogel (3G, 3A) and Patrick Kenzie (1G, 3A) eventually got tired of swinging the disc back and forth, they looked to Hannah Lewis (6G, 0A) to end the point. Play was sloppy on the other side of the disc, as Étienne Pépin (2G, 1A) was the only Ratioxoxoer not to record a throwaway. Team Julia will hope to end the season on a high note in fivals while Kindha will hope to avoid last place in a rematch against Marie-Ange.
Semifinal #1: Be My Frisbae (Laura) (19) vs. JT Got Us Fallin' in Love (Morgan) (20)
Team Laura jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the night that mattered, but a late run from Team Morgan tied the game at 19-19 with only a few minutes to play. After an untimely drop by GM Laura, Kristie Ellis picked up the disc and ripped a huck to an uncovered Geoff Solomon to give Team Morgan the late lead. On the final point, it was Charlotte Mussels with an uncharacteristic drop that sealed her team’s fate as Morgan was able to run out the clock. GM Morgan (4G, 1A) led the way for his team while Travis Davidson (3G, 3A) managed 4 D blocks in the loss. Lance Blackstock (1G, 6A) threw 11 away and yet still won the game.
Semifinal #2: Reason to love Ottawa #40 (Nat) (18) vs. How to Lose a Disc in 10 Stalls (Brian) (23)
Expectations were high for this one but fans were left disappointed after a lacklustre performance from Team Nat. Team Brian led by 7 at half and hung on for a comfortable win to earn their spot in the finals. GM Brian continued to show off his team’s depth by thrusting Thomas Sattolo (2G, 4A) and Chris Castonguay (4A, 1A) into starring roles. Nat leaned on Seb Belanger (0G, 5A) and Hugh Podmore (1G, 3A) to anchor the offense, but the team never found its rhythm. They’ll look to rebound in the bronze medal match again Team Laura.
