Gender ratio

What is the reason/ history behind the rule that the pulling team doesn't have to match the gender ratio of the receiving team.  In all coed tournaments the receiving team gets to decided either it is 4m and 3 f or 4f and 3m.   The team that won coed nationals last year used 4f and 3m almost all their games.
