Hi Ocua Rules Committee,
I have a question about how to properly invoke the following rule during a game. To be clear, I feel this is one of those rules that never needs to be called (especially at a league level), but I’d like to understand it more as it has been invoked during a game I have played in and I wasn’t sure how to handle it.
XIII. A. 3.
If the disc comes to rest on the playing field proper, a member of the team becoming offense must put the disc into play within ten seconds after it comes to rest. After ten seconds elapse, a defensive player within three meters of the disc may announce disc in, and then initiate and continue the stall count, but only if a defensive player has given audible warnings of ten and five seconds (the pre-stall).utti
Can the team becoming defense immediately issue an audible warning of 10 seconds before they are within three meters of the disc? To be a little more specific, can a defensive player issue an audible warning of 10 seconds (and eventually 5 seconds) as soon as the disc is turned over, comes to rest, and before they are within 3 meters of the disc? Then, once they arrive within 3 meters of the disc, initiate the stall count? I’m thiking of a punt situation here.
When giving this audible warning, does a player only need to say “10”…”5”…”disc in, stalling 1…etc? What I’m getting at is the player who gives the audible warning does not need to say anything else other than “10”…”5”…disc in? I feel that not a lot of people understand this rule and would not know what was going on if someone loudly annouced “10” and so on after a turnover during a game.
I feel that giving this audible warning in most league games would simply result in an argument which would eventaully be solved by the XIX. Etiquette E. If a novice player commits an infraction out of sincere ignorance of the rules, it should be common practice to stop play and explain the infraction. However, in doing so, would upset at least 1 person on the other team, but probably more. It would also likely confuse a new player even more than they already are. Plus, the player who invoked it would probably be perceived as showing poor sportsmanship. None of this would be good for anyone.
Can you please clarify and provide your thoughts.
