Spring has come. From where we stand we can glimpse the coming summer. But sadly, stretching before it is the long cold winter of Parity league. Parity, as I think we all agree, is the most wonderful time of the year. But all things have their season, and we must put it away, for now.
So while I can sit at my desk, enjoy my lunch and dream of fresh clipped fields and cold beers shared after a game, I am still saddened by the end of yet another year of Parity.
And what a year it was.
Last night we played a Championship game! Stan’s Sturgeons vs. Karma Down Under! It was ultimately a very close game that ended 17-19 for Stan’s Sturgeons. You’ll note I have nothing particularly creative to say about the game and that I listed Karma’s score first. What can I say? The bitter sting of defeat is still fresh on my tongue.
Congratulations to Stan’s Sturgeons, OCUA Parity’s 2015-2016 Champion. I gave you a cup to drink from, two bottles of de-alcoholized sparkling wine to drink, and what did you do? Finished half of one bottle and left the trophy at the dome.
How will the Parity trophy earn the legendary stories of other great sports trophies if you won’t even celebrate with it? One of you could have baptized a child in our great and revered chalice. Maybe it could have be dropped in a pool? You guys could have done great things with the trophy! I’m very disappointed.
Thankfully, we do still have other highlights.
Most Married: David Townsend missed his game to go get married! Congratulations, Dave! The wedding is on Thursday of this week. We should all raise a glass of something and toast in the general direction of Mexico that evening.
EDIT: Adam MacDonald also got married. He got ring tattoos instead of rings! I also assume his wife wrote the invitations, due to the risk of typos. Adam now leads the league and his marriage in D's.
Role Reversal: Allan Godding normally scores goals but he decided to throw for 5 assists, more than his normally prolific teammates Al Colantonio and Chris Sullivan.
Scoring Machine: Nina Ramic scored 6 of her team’s 17 goals. Hey Nina! That’s pretty friggen’ good.
D-lightful: I had 5 D’s. Maybe if I’d had 6, we’d have won? Lesson for next year - try harder.
Irresponsible: Al, Laura Chambers, and Brian Kells all had lots and lots of throw aways (8, 7, and 6, respectively). This is odd for Laura and Kells. It approaches par for Al.
Weekly Bisang Update: Rob Ives and Alex Bush Bisanged the hardest, with 3 drops each.
Noteables: Kevin Hughes demonstrated his abilities to be a disk mover. His stat line doesn’t show it but he was a smart, responsible, and reliable handler.
So was Kris Bergmann, who has continued to improve his game and grow as a player.
Stacey Wowchuk scored a bunch.
Every player on Katy Parity with a first name starting with S scored 3 goals. Illuminati confirmed.
Jeff Hunt had one of his best nights of the year! He was 2 goals shy of a triple triple. He was too busy throwing assists, though.
Andre Scott had 3 goals, no throwaways, and no drops for a relatively high-scoring and still perfect stat-line.
Highlight of the Week: Stan’s only goal was the last goal of his team’s season, and also the final point of the game. With the game 17-18, a break by Karma would have sent the game to universe point. So Stan decided to score. Good job Stan, enjoy being insufferable about it for the foreseeable future. You’ve earned it.

anti-climactic celebration
Cheer up Chris! We never saw you look so dejected as you looked last night, handing off the trophy to Stan's Sturgeons. Although I agree I'm a little disappointed to hear about the trophy's fate that night - it would have fit in much better with the decor at Pub Italia where all the doctors went to celebrate last night. That's right, doctors-only celebration - myself, Nina Ramic, and Chris Tran - apparantly no one else but us knows how to party on a Monday night. No one from Stan's team came out to either, you'd think the victors would want a real alcohol beverage to celebrate the win? Shameful. And, kinda lame.

Parity League Coordinators reserve the right...
... to sulk at any time, for whatever reason. In this case, my knees hurt more than the loss.

trophy and knee pain
The last that I saw of the trophy, Stan was drinking from it.
Keates, if your knee pain has anything to do with me tripping you, I apologize. If it makes you feel better, I woke up with a second knee cap from your studs.

No apologies needed, sometimes feet get tangled!
That said, I'm sorry you have extra bones as a result of my cleats. Perhaps you should see someone about that?

Invite?
Did you guys use your pagers to send the invite? That might explain why no one made it out ...

After your last turnout I
After your last turnout I should know better than to think that Stacy Wowchuck might actually turn down a beer invite! Alas, I did think of you as we were headed out, but you were no where to be found. Perhaps I should have asked Keates for your number - he seems to have a solid collection of women's numbers from the league.

STALL DOWN!
You regretfully didn't mention the late game last night. This may have been better than the championship game based on the quantity of disillusioned celebrity players (Katy Parity and Luke Parity). Incredible highlights include:
1. There were so many ineffective and distracting red beards. But not Jeff Hunt. He was my easter fantasy. He made my heart go hip hop with all of his D.
2. Remember the time that Ewelina made a fantastic D and then someone caught it behind her?
3. Seconds later, Sprysa throws a questionable stall 9.5 hammer which Kirsten D's and Bush somehow catches for a point. We could not have been happier. Retribution... But wait for it... Brian Kells yells Stall Down*. (*questionable call) Some sort of expletive was yelled. The play went back. There was no highlight reel.
4. Geofford had some effective chirps. Most of them were at someone named Klaus.
5. I learned who Bisang is and what a Bisang is. ^ Thank-you, Geofford. You were very effective at letting us know about/predicting our (questionable) plays.
I think the lowlight was Luke Parity players yelling "just throw it to Khalid" while giving up. #win

Maybe this isn't on theme...
But I just wanted to chime in to thank everyone for such a fun season! To the coordinators and captains for giving up their time and energy to make this possible, to the scorekeepers for not taking it personally when they were blamed with every transgression short of murder, and to everyone else for helping me get through another Ottawa winter.
Until next year!

Agree!!! This was a
Agree!!! This was a fantastic season, one of my most enjoyable in Ultimate so far, that's for sure.
PS did anyone check on the volunteer hours? There should be some awards here too. We need to congratulate Matt Masse and Chris Keates for a WHOPPING 1337 and 1007 volunteer hours respectively. Congrats on a job well done!!! I'm sure there will be special surprises for you both at the party. But, why the 330 h discrepancy, despite supposedly equal involvement in the league? Is Keates a slacker or does Masse just take more time to get the job done? More importantly, how did you rack up over 1000 hours each? That's like 50 hours per week of parity, equivalent to a full time job (unless your a doctor, where that would probably only classify you as part-time or at best 2/3). Impressive! Lastly, third place goes to Kris Bergmann with 46 hours who just pulled ahead of the captain's platoon, and an honorable mention appears to go to Alex Bush, who's volunteer hours can only be interpreted by a mathematician.

1337, 1007, and Euler's
1337, 1007, and Euler's Identity are not real numbers (I like to call them "sarcastavalues"). There is a secret special joke in each one! Can Parity find the joke?
In finding the joke, I always have faith in Parity.

Ok the best I've got is some
Ok the best I've got is some nerdy internet slang referring to Masse as "elite" and Keates as "loot"
Euler's could be Alex Bush earning -1 volunteer points, or could also more globally infer the mathematical beauty of parity league statskeeping and striving for team equality.
1007 could also refers to Keates' favorite dream car, the "Peugeot 1007". Please google-image this.

I think they're pretty obvs*
I think they're pretty obvs* (*as I can only assume Wynne would say):
Masse is l33t like Matthew Lillard and Johnny Lee Miller.
Keates is a backward tool.
Alex Bush is a nerd.
I'd like to give a special shout out to Brent Burton. Within ten yards of his endzone, he handblocked me on two separate throws ON THE SAME POINT!!! Honourable mention goes to the rest of my team who got the first turnover back, only for me to make the same mistake again.
